Getting off Emsam, possibly trying Lexapro

Posted by Jeff81 on June 7, 2007, at 20:07:11

Hi,

I saw my pdoc tonight and getting off Emsam. I have been on Emsam for 12 weeks and at 12mg for 5.5 weeks. I am probably going to try Lexapro.

I tried a period of taking no antidepressants before this and I have to say I am doing better on Emsam then antidepressants. It took away my suicidal thoughts. With that being said it did not hit my expectations. I am starting to learn that no meds are going to help me too much.

I am nervous for this transition period. I think I am switching to Lexapro. I have to go to the 6mg patch for 2 weeks and then 3 weeks with no meds before I start Lexapro (or another SSRI). I am scared about what might happen during these 5 weeks (really longer bc it takes time for new meds to kick in).

I know everyone is different but I would like to hear what SSRI's worked best for people. I have been on Luvox, Celexa, and Prozac. Is Lexapro different from these? Any feedback about Emsam withdrawal, SSRI's experience, and Lexapro vs. other SSRI's would be appreciated.

Thanks for listening. I don't have many people to talk to who understand my troubles.

:) Jeff

Well, I loved lexapro and I never should have stopped taking it (it didn't work again after that). It didn't work right away. I think it took about 3 months to kick in, but when it did it was great. I didn't have any side effects either. None of the other SSRI's worked for me (I never tried luvox). My main issue is anxiety with depression and lexapro was a lifesaver. Hope it works for you too.

Brooke seriously you had no side effects? No startup anxiety? I am already on benzos and luvox right now. what dose did you start on and how long to work. Thanks Love Phillipa ps more people say lexapro helped than any other SSRI from what I"ve read.

I started at 10 mgs and it took 3 months for it to work. I think I went to 20 mgs 2 1/2 months after that, so it could have been the dose or the length of time. I'm not sure. All I know is that I haven't felt that good in years and I was a complete idiot for going off it. And no, I did not have any side effects which is rare for me.

Do I think lexapro would work for you? I don't know. I wasn't taking a benzo when I took Lexapro. Are you thinking about trying it?

Well the luvox is the only things I've tolerated in yaars besides the benzos so what do you think of a low dose? Any other ideas? Love Phillipa

I've never tried Luvox. Is it good for anxiety? You could start out on 5 mgs of Lexapro if you decided to try it. The pills are 10 mgs.

Thanks Brooke that may be what I do. I just know that luvox is the only ad that has never given me side effects a miracle in itself. But it is and has petered out. Love Phillips
