You won't get Xanax from NHS. xanax is only available in the private sector in UK.

I am taking Xanax (now the XR version) for a long time. It is the best benzo, if you don't want to be depressed on the way of fighting anxiety.

Cheers

I have only taken xanax and valium; however I have heard that klonopin can depress people. Xanax is known for some antidpressant properties, and I can attest to that; it does help a bit with depression. I've taken it for 20+ years and find a lower dose is the best (2mg or less).

I find that Oxazepam is very depression friendly, ie if anything, it has an positive effect on my mood (as well as zapping my anxiety!).

So far, my experiences with benzos has been alprazolam, lorazepam, and clonazepam. Neither Xanax nor Ativan caused depression, but Klonopin cause me to be extremely depressed. Ativan works as slowly as Klonopin, but isn't as strong (IMO). It also doesn't last as long, which may be part of why it doesn't cause depression. I theorize that is why Klonopin made me depressed. It's so long acting that it accumulates. That's my theory at least.

Everyday for over 30years and haven't increased the doseage and their were times when I didn't need them and didn't take any. But I know the UK feels differently. good luck Rovers

The first time I took klonopin I remember feeling kind of depressed.

I'm taking it again (after 4 years I think..) because I'm in an in-between period where I'm switching from an SSRI to an MAOI--so I needed something to help me through, so my doc gave me klonopin.

This time it's not making me depressed. It actually helps me because I'm usually chronically irritated, sad and ruminating on anything bad that happens in my day. Somehow klonopin helped me calm down and take things a lot easier. I don't feel that irritated or that angry at everything and everyone. It's been a great relief.

But I guess it acts differently on each person. Even in one person it can act differently at different times, like it did it my case.

Your story says that it doesn't make physically depended immediately (what is claimed of many people or written in books, studies). So if there's more bad stress you can start but you're capable to stop. That is probably easier with a long-acting benzo, I think. What I have read is that it is still not clear if benzos make somebody physically depended. Maybe benzos just work. That benzos work for anxiety is clear (amygdala pictures, direct path colliculus superior) but why tolerance or not isn't.

I think cognitive deficits are more caused due to sedation (eg. valium) than to the "slow down" of the brain.

There still is the long acting librium that is not depressogenic.

It's been abundantly clear for several decades sbd that benzos not only cause dependence, they can also be addictive. This has been confirmed by clinical studies and was easily predictable anyway since benzos can replace alcohol and barbiturates - and prevent withdrawal symptoms in people addicted to those drugs. It was long known that a drug capable of replacing another was very likely to share many of the same properties and this has proved to be the case with benzos.

Unfortunately honesty is one of the first causalities of addiction, with denial and self deception following closely behind.

Was in the pharmacy to pick up an antibiotic and my benzos today and talking with a pharmacist. I said what do you do for a person like me who has taken benzos for over 30years and now tolerant. She said raise the dose. Love Phillipa different trains of thought different countries.

Benzos behave the same where ever you go in the world but some professionals are better educated in their limitations than others. There are also important differences in health care systems between countries; for example in some systems private healthcare dominates and patients are a source of potential profit, and doctors benefit when treatment is prolonged. In other countries free public healthcare is the norm and every prescription is a drain on limited resources. Doctors working in the latter are forced by necessity to be more realistic and pragmatic in their prescribing habits, using only those therapies proven to bring the patient to full recovery in the shortest period of time with the least expense.

Recently a psychiatrist raised your benzo dose (quite spectacularly it must be said). According to the ideas popular in the US this would have been a very wise move, and an effective treatment for what was claimed to be anxiety induced depression. According to the ideas popular in the UK it would have been a predictable disaster. Going by that experience then, which model was more accurate?

You can get tolerant to many substances in psychiatry. Is school medicine (psychiatry) a failure?

No if psychiatrists went back to the way it was when I first saw one and was given a benzo they also did the psychcotheraphy and the patient trusted the doc if it was a good match. The one I had in Connecticut was so good he had me med free till I moved to VA Beach and he had a friend he referred me to. Who I worked with and was also very good. Only .125 of xanax was required. Wasn't til the thyroid went that higher doses came into play . Hence the reason the pdoc here said it's physical and not psychiatric. And my PHD is sending me to a new endo that she has a lot of patients who like and use as this one is the person who has messed up my meds. Love Phillipa

Where is it said that psychiatry is a failure? What I'm trying to point out is important differences in the way it's practised by psychiatrists in different countries.
