What dose of wellbutrin were you on? As anything above 450mg can cause them. Could be you had an underlying seizure disorder and the wellbutrin brought it. I'm sure you're seeing a neurologist what does he say? I understand your fear. What are you taking for seizures and what type damage has occurred if you don't mind me asking? Love Phillipa

I thought i had a seizure once, but my dr.
said it was withdrawal. I was better in about
a month and a half. I don't know what it was;
to me it *felt* like a seizure.

You say, "grand mal"-- can you describe that, if
you are well enough? And what anti-seizure meds
are you taking?

Brain damage- yup, i asked my dr. if i had that
after that event, and he said no. But it *felt*
like brain damage, if that is any help to you.

I'm OK now -- i think :-)

Hi, Brad.

Here's the thing: there are several conditions that really contraindicate Wellbutrin -- and any sort of history of seizure would be one of them. Had you told the doctor who prescribed Wellbutrin that you'd had a seizure in the past? If he knew that, and still prescribed it, then I question his judgment.

Wellbutrin was actually withdrawn from the market when it first came out back in the 80s because of the seizure risk. I, for one, am very pleased it was reintroduced, because it's great for me. That just shows how differently we all react to these drugs.

Most of the newer antidepressants don't have an increased risk of seizure. If you're suffering from depression, and your doctor thinks that an antidepressant could be helpful for you, it's worth trying. Especially if you're already taking an anticonvulsant, which would lower your risk even further.

Wellbutrin is the only drug in its class. All of the other antidepressants available work very differently, so the side effect profiles will be very different. I hope that knowing this may help relieve your anxiety about other antidepressants.

I'm sorry that happened to you. It must have been very frightening. Welcome to Babble. I hope you can get some responses that help you.

And did you know that typing a message in all caps makes it very difficult to read? ;-)

So to clarify two years ago you had your first seizure from wellbutrin? That part is not that clear whether you had a seizure before the wellbutrin or because of taking it. May I ask why wellbutrin was the med the doc chose? Love Phillipa

You don't need to have a seizure disorder for Wellbutrin to give you one.

Brad, how much wellbutrin were you on, and had you been on other medication? Those things can affect your seizure threshold. Also excessive alcohol consumption.

If you had previous seizures, you should never have been prescribed bupropion (wellbutrin). I am sorry you experienced this.

Abby

I found out today when riding my bike and talking with a neighbor that her realtive had been prescribed wellbutrin and he had a seizure . I thought if 450mg or less you couldn't have one? Love Phillipa ps wierdest thing for that to come out in the conversation that was on antidepressants.
