Xanax XR Tablets. Can I break it?

Posted by Pluto on May 29, 2007, at 2:56:25

Hi,

I recently got Xanax XR 1mg. Unfortunately once a day is not adequately helping. I would like to break it into two and take twice daily.

But

Would the XR effect go away if I break the tablets?

I find it hard to believe that breaking med into two pieces would make a difference, either positive or negative. The real issue is whether the total doseage you're taking is adequate. That's what needs to be adjusted.

My pdoc tried to be nice and give me the long acting and said I could break it she said when I questioned her that I would just get the full amount all at once. Love Phillipa

Is the pill scored? It does come in a 0.5 mg xr version so you should be able to break it in half to see if the lower dose is enough for you to take and get some relief and possibly extend the benefit you get from it. That's what I would try to do and if the 0.5 twice a day is not enough, try and get the dosage increased.

Breaking the pill does not affect the XR effect.
