So I finally got a repsonse from my doctor: GEODON

Posted by JerryPharmStudent on May 3, 2007, at 4:10:28

Well, actually through his nurse. And this is the reponse I got

" He wants you to stay on Geodon until you see him next in June and only take 80mg"

I called back FURIOUS

"You don't understand - this medication made me CRAZY and SUCIDAL! I should NOT have to bear the horiffic side ffects of this rstlessnes and I WILL NOT take Geodon any longer. In fact I never even went up to the 80mg 2x daily dose because the Akathaisa was so horrific. IF the doctor cannot figuoure out something else to try - liek Abilify - then that is ridiculous because there MUST be something. I WILL NOT suffer for this and shouldn't be expected too!!! I would like a call back IMMEDIATELY!"

Man I was furious. So I got a call back and guess what? The only thing he could come up with was to increase my BuSpar dose from 15mg 2.x daily to 30mg 2x daily!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hung up simply digusted. But I have no other doctor to go to. I live in a small town with ONE pdoc. I have no insurance. This guy is an idiot and I'm furious.

I thikn a trycyclic would work wonders for me - as they actually have helpedme in the past. BUT NOOOOOOO. My Pdoc is stupid and thinsk everyone should be on Risperdal, Geodon or Effexor - and those are the only meds that work.

OMG - I am so mad. It is NOT FAIR that my life be put into a man's hands liek this who I can only see every 8 weeks and cannot talk to directly- only to his nurse who is dumb as a stump.

BuSpar is actually related to antipsychotics in that it hits 5HT2 and D2 receptors. EPS is a common side effect. And studies show it not to be that much use especially in TRD.

So what to do? I'm SO SICK OF THIS. At least by stopping the devil's Drug REMERON I have lost 7 pounds.

Give me a prescription pad and let me write my own please - I know SO much more than this doctor. DISGUSTING.

Sorry for the long rant but I am SOOOO FURIOUS.

Thanks
Jerry

Hi Jerry
I have followed your posts for the last month and I have felt very sorry for you. You are in a very difficult situation. Unfortunately I have not been able to give much help as I live in Europe and dont know much about US health system etc.

Then I think you should insist again on having a tricyclic. I never have understood this US "trend" of giving everyone AP's. They are used very little in Europe for depression.

Congratulations.

That is exactly what I have done after wasting 30 years of my life on stupid docs and pdocs. I buy all my meds mailorder. I dont know if that is an option for you but tricyclics are generally very cheap.

Dont be sorry. Being mad is a huge improvement compared to your posts one month ago. You show both initiative and responsibility by now. You are on the right track.

Just one advice for you. It may sound silly, but try to get out of your home every day. Spending at least one hour a day outside in daylight can have a tremendous effect on your mood. What you actually do outside is less important.

Dont give up hope. We are many people all over the world following your struggle and wanting to support you.

brgds

I don't know if this will be of much help, but could you try and get in to see a general practice doctor instead of a psychiatrist? In my experience, doctors are usually more willing to prescribe the medications you suggest and let you try what you want, rather than choosing for you.

I understand your reaction, Jerry. It makes me wonder if you have the best pdoc for your particular needs. My pdoc, who's really a highly respected one, would never leave a patient on a drug that's causing akathesia. I had that reaction to something once, and he took me off asap.

It's not as if it goes away--unless you were on a high dose, and lowered it significantly. And even then I would consult about the long-term effects. At the very least, he should see you and discuss the situation. And not next June-- it's totally out of the question to wait that long.

But you know, I wouldn't waste energy being mad at the guy-- I would, instead, find another pdoc. One who's better prepared to know how to handle atypicals and the reactions to them.

If you need to stick with this doc, I would very calmly go in and tell him that it's not possible or stay on a drug that causes so much akathesia at x dose (whatever you're taking) and that you want to be changed to something with more potential to be a long-term solution. If he's at all reasonable, he'll be accommodating.

But I do think you should insist on either seeing or speaking directly with him on the phone about what med to prescribe instead. It's better to get reasonable, and to argue a strong case, than to get mad at these people.

It's best to find someone responsible who knows what he's doing and is caring. But I mean, in the absence of that, which I know is hard to find.

No way, should you stay on a drug that's causing bad akathesia for a moment more.

I hope you've gone way down , or possibly off the geodon. Can you call back and ask very insistently for an appointment?

Honore

I know how you feel. I was on Prozac this summer, and it was by far the worst medication I had ever been on. I kept calling, begging to be put on something else, and I kept being told to wait it out, as if something was going to change. The stupid nurse even went as far as to blame my problems on smoking marijuana, which when I was on Prozac I couldn't do anyway! But, this is why I am no longer with Kaiser. I had a problem with a medication already with my new pdoc, and they got me in right away and got it fixed. That's more like it!

I'm sorry you're having so much trouble. I hope you can find a solution. I think the suggestion of seeing a general practitioner might be a good one. They'll usually give you what you want if you present enough evidence that you think it might work best for you.

-Bonnie

PS- BuSpar is garbage :D

Hi J

Your doc sounds like an absolute and utter waste of space.

ditch your doc. If he's prescribing other meds that are helping, you may want to just drop the Geodon and keep taking everything else...keep your appointments until you find a doc whom you *know* will work with you w/o doing crazy things like putting you on an antipsychotic (waaaaaay off label) and then telling you to "stick it out".

"Stick it out" ? That's ridiculous. These aren't antibiotics or antivirals; these are psych meds, they're meant to help you feel *better*; if they make you feel *worse* then you probably need to discontinue.

I feel so bad for you.

I had akathasia a few times and it was the absolute worst feeling of my life!

Can you try benadryl? It seemed to help relieve the symptoms for me.. Or if you have access to benzo's, they also help.

I pray you get better soon.

I am so sorry.
