Why I am so down in the evenings?

Posted by Pluto on May 1, 2007, at 4:00:26

Hi,

Though I take 40mg of Prozac plus 50mg of amisulpride, my mood is very low in the evenings. whatever I plan in the mornings when I feel refreshed is not being done if I leave them for evenings. Yesterday, I planned to do some investments in a new project, but when it was evening, all my enthusiasm went away. This has become a routine.
Is there a drug to keep me fresh in the evenings too?

I don't know, but it happens to me all the time. I don't seem to want to do anything in the evenings, and I get really sad. So I can relate, at least. I'm on 50mg Lamictal and 20mg Lexapro.

Maybe its just part of the human pysche. I mean, evenings are for recharging your batteries and relaxing after a hard day at work, you know? We can't be productive 100% of the time. We all have certain rhythms and bio-clocks. And I seriously doubt there is a drug that can help you in the evenings. Unless you count the stims.

That said, its generally not healthy to feel depressed, so well, thats something that needs to be addressed. I think worsening in the evenings is a symptom of atypical depression, but I could be wrong.

Kind regards

Meri

In atypical depression you tend to feel worse in the evenings than in the morning. In 'regular' depression the pattern is the reverse, the worse time is the morning.

Maybe it has something to do with naturally dropping energy levels. When I was depressed, evenings were the worst and I would always go to sleep early. Even now that I'm not depressed, I still sometimes feel a drop in mood at night. Maybe you should mention it to your doctor and ask for advice.

I get worse at night, too. I'm generally worse in the earlier part of the evening, and then I get a little better later (way later). You would think the worsening mood would make me want to go to bed earlier, but, unfortunately not.

My T thinks it's because I'm not as occupied at night with schoolwork, etc. She's probably right. When we aren't busy with other things, our minds tend to wander and we ruminate about things. Thinking can be a risky pasttime. ;)

The mystery of the human cycles. Some cycles seem daily, some seasonally, some make no sense at all. Obviously they are more of a mysterious issue in bipolar disorder.

Sometimes my mood is worse in the mornings, sometimes it is worse it the evenings, unrelated to events of the day. On some antidepressents, they cycle more. While on Emsamr recently, I had a day where I plummetted extremely low twice in one day out of the blue.

God bless the scientists who get all this figured out. I wish I had the resources to figure it all out myself. I want to know what the h*** is going on with my body.

That's me too. Mornings are awful, evenings are awesome.

Have you tried taking your meds a bit later in the day?
