Elavil ? for depression?

Posted by TrishP on April 24, 2007, at 15:53:14

After taking various SSRIs and SNRIs for 15 years, I can't take them anymore due to the pain they cause my bladder (spasms, urgency, burning - yuk!). I went to a urologist and she gave me Elavil 25mg. to try at night. It is supposed to help with cystitis/bladder pain.

I'm afriad it will make me fat or too sleepy. I will probably try just 12.5mg tonight.

I don't know if it will help with depression though.

Any suggestions? I hate feeling sleepy and hung over.

Take it as early as possable in the evening. It can be a very effective antidepressant. It should be less likely to cause GI and other mentioned problems than the SSRIs.

Its worth a shot.

I agree. 25mg is a low dose to start with, by the way.

If it makes you too sleepy, there are several other drugs in the same class that might not. But elavil's a good drug.

Tirsh, did this med ever end up helping your depression? I'm thinking of starting it as I've started to react negatively to SSRIs.
Thanks!
