Help! ANXIETY/INSOMNIA Caused by Prozac or Geodon?

Posted by CA 2 NJ on April 17, 2007, at 15:58:51

Hi all. I am really in need of any help, insight, experiences anyone has regarding Anxiety and/or Insomnia due to taking Prozac and/or Geodon. Your help would be so appreciated as I am having a rough time right now and I believe it to be caused by either one or both of these meds. And also due to the fact that I'm Bipolar and not on a "TRUE" Mood Stabilizer (but will be.)

Also I'm wondering if anyone experienced or has knowledge of saying things that came out of no where? Like calling someone a name even though you didn't have a CLUE as to why you did so? That's not at all like me and it's only started since I began taking Prozac and Geodon about 2 weeks ago.

Here are the Dosages of the Medications I am on:

- Geodon: 40mg (20mg/2x day)
- Seroquel: 100mg (100mg/1x day, at bedtime)
- Prozac: 10 mg (10mg/1x day)
- Xanax XR: 4mg (1mg/4x day)
- Lunesta: 3mg (3mg/1x day, at bedtime)
- Yaz (BCP): 1 Tablet (1 Tablet at bedtime)

Starting tomorrow night (at my insistance) since I've been an anxious/manic/insomniatic mess, My Psychiatrist is putting me on Depakote ER: 500mg (500mg/1x day, at bedtime)

To help you understand why I'm taking all these meds, it's because I have the Following Disorders:

- Bipolar I, Mixed with Ultra Rapid Cycling
- Borderline Personality Disorder
- Panic Disorder with Mild Agoraphobia
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
- Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder
- Antisocial Personality Disorder
- Dependant Personality Disorder
- Histrionic Personality Disorder
- Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (in addition to the OCD - there is a difference)

I would be most grateful if some of you out there would please find the time to tell me anything they can about my medications. Thanks so much. Take good care! :)

Hugs,
CA 2 NJ

Oh my goodness! That sounds horrible! About like me! I'm so sorry you had to go through that! What were your starting and ending dosages? And if they differed, how quickly did the Doctor have you go up?

I think I'm going to go without it. My Psychiatrist told me to go off it anyway but I was the one who wanted to stay on it because he didn't have me on a true mood stabilizer. But now since I'll be going on Depakote, no need to worry about that any longer.

I sincerely thank you for your reply and wish you all the best! I hope you're now doing better and that you have found the right thing for your well-being.

I really appreciate your response. :) Take care!

My first response was out of no where, 10mg every 4 days. Not my best suggestion. Geodon and prozac can both have anxiety with them. They sure don't help with it.

Hi,

Here is a link I want you to look at for a better understanding of some of the experts in the field are doing with diagnosis and treatment.

The Depakote will give you fast relief of your cycling. Geodon has been reported to be stimulating in some research I have come accross.
You have BP I with ultra rapid and mixed states. The Prozac will exacerbate the mood cycling and anxiety hands down with Bipoar I.

I am questioning all the diagnosis you have. Were you given them before you bipolar was diagnosed? Some of them probably stem from your bipolar disorder. Thats alot to swallow for one person.

I think the 1st 4 days I was on 60g, then I alternated with 120g, but I don't think I got to the point where I was steady at 120g - I was too messed up. I also had a bad reaction to its cousin Abilify.
Have you tried any other mood stabilizers?
Thanks for caring, but no luck yet.

Hi there! Thanks so much for your response. :)

To answer your questions, I was not diagnosed as having Bipolar and all the Personality Disorders until early January 2005. Although for YEARS I had mentioned that I believe I had Bipolar to various Doctors and Therapists. I did have one psychologist believe I may have Borderline Personality Disorder, but that was about 13 years ago.

All of the Anxiety/Panic issues were diagnosed about 13 years ago. ALL of my Doctors believed I suffered From Major Depression and that's what was causing all of these anxiety issues. So of course, I was put on 1 antidepressant after another yet nothing ever worked for long.

My current Psychiatrist is the 1st Doctor to TRULY acknowledge that my issues stem from anxiety. Every other Doctor before being diagnosed with Bipolar has tried to treat the "major depression" and in doing so, would also be treating the anxiety issues.

I totally agree with you that a lot of my disorders stem from having Bipolar. It's a tough disorder! And yes I also agree that Depakote will help me. It has before. :)

BUT I do need some kind of antidepressant or something that will keep me from getting depressed to go along with my Depakote. Hence the Prozac. Although My Psychiatrist thoght treating me with an antipsychotic (Geodon) & Prozac would stabilize me. LOL

I have to laugh at that one because I told him from day 1 I HAVE to be on a mood stabilizer and he told me Geodon was approved by he FDA for just that. Well I feel the only thing the Geodon did was make me an anxious mess with a severe case of insomnia. But then again I have been down the Trial & Error road MANY times.

Do you think that 10mg paired with 500mg of Depakote ER will work? I know My Doc plans on taking my Depakote up to 1,000mg ER if the 500mg works. And at that time I will probably go back to the 20mg of Prozac or switch to Effexor (which he and I have discussed.)

Sorry for the novel here. LOL It's just you seem so knowledgable and sincere that I would like your opinion. Oh and I have already decided to stop the Geodon, which is fine with My Doctor anyway as he wanted to take me off it at my last visit.

Thanks so much for the info and the links. I really appreciate all your help! :) I would love to hear back from you in regard to my response.

Take care!

Hugs,
CA 2 NJ

P.S. Is it a good idea to take the Prozac at the same time as the Depakote? Or does the timing matter? Thanks again!

Hey there! I agree that stopping the Geodon and starting Depakote is a good idea for me. I need something strong for my Mixed, Ultra Rapid Cycling Bipolar I.

Actually yes I have gotten 3 opinions. LOL I am on my 3rd Psychiatrist since being diagnosed with Bipolar and the Personality Disorders. I was diagnosed with those in January 2006 so a lot of this is new to me although I have been saying I think I'm Bipolar for literally 15 years. I was diagnosed with all of the anxiety disorders about 13 years ago.

Thanks so much for your response. I'm so happy that you wrote! I love it when people respond as I really respect he opinions of the others on the site. :)

Take good care and have a great night!

Awww I'm so very sorry you haven't found anything that works for you as of yet. :( I truly am as I know that feeling all too well and completely empathize with your situation.

I have tried the following Mood Stabilizers/Atypical Antipsychotics:

- Depakote (which I just started last night - so far, so good. This is my 2nd round with Depakote BUT this time I am taking the ER version at bedtime. Hopefully it will work out well! The 1st time My Old Psychiatrist put me on this in addition to Lithium and it made me all doped up so that's why I stopped it before. I think on it's own, I probably could have handled it.)

- Lithium (I don't recall anything really bad about this other than feeling kinda weird on it. At least in the beginning. I never went above 900mg as it didn't work well enough on my Mixed, Ultra Rapid Cycling.)

- Lamictal (I couldn't get over 75mg without it making me very anxious. I tried this 4 times going up so slowly and still the anxiety got to me as soon as I went beyond 75mg.)

- Zyprexa (It's been a while, but I remember being hungry on that at even 2.5mg and also very tired. Might be great for sleep though!)

- Seroquel (I currently take anywhere between 50mg & 100mg before bed along with Lunesta and Xanax XR and I sleep well. Well since stopping the Geodon.)

- Topamax (I had a hard time talking or thinking on this. Guess that's why they call it Dopeamax. LOL And that was even at the smallest dose. Too bad too as I had high hopes for this one. I tried it more than once also and the same thing happened everytime.)

I hope you don't mind my asking, but why were you taking the Geodon and Abilify? Was it also due to Bipolar Disorder? Or maybe Borderline Personality Disorder?

The reason I ask is because I have been through a lot of meds and maybe I could offer some insight or something to help. I would love to try to help you in any way possible. :)

Thanks for your responses and you are so very welcome for caring! That's just the kinda person I am. :) And I hope things turn around for you.

Take care! I hope to hear back from you soon.

Hugs,
CA 2 NJ
