Can someone explain or point to a good website that outlines the diagnositc criteria for this disorder? My family doc yesterday that when he is having trouble, he works with pdocs at an inpatient facility, that if someone is not responding to ssri's that they find a lot of them are bipolar. Does anyone find this true?

This conclusion has always bothered me.
What happened to SSRI's not working becuse they are innefective for some people?

Phillipa,
A good book for you to read is "Why Your Depression Isn't getting better" by Dr. M Bartos. It is about the epidemic of undiagnosed bipolar disorders. I'm NOT saying that ALL people who fail to respond to multiple trial of AD's all have underlying bipolar disorders. This raises many red flags and needs to be considered, esp. when they get a good initial response,then the drug poops-out. There is a broad spectrum to bipolar disorders with overlapping symptoms. Too many people are handed out these meds like candy from their family doctors (who spend about 10 minutes with them) who really don't need to be on them in the first place. That's why they go from med to med, when all they probably need is psycho-therapy.

That sounds pretty normal to me. Not ideal. Anyone with adolescent kids should have no trouble agreeing. But not really very strange at all.

Agree l00%. But remember the drug companies need to sell meds and the docs listen to the reps as they don't have time to research. Hence the CEU's even for docs now I think. Love Phillipa

I was misdiagnosed for many, many years as being depressed until a very wise doctor took the time to really listen to my history and it turns out I am Bipolar, likely Bipolar II as I tend more towards depression and dysphoria with horrible rage. Anyways I was put on anti-depressants as monotherapy and they only seemed to make things worse. Now with the addition of an anti-psychotic and a mood stabilizer I am much more balanced. I like the following website for Bipolar info:
