I am suffering from recurrent painful cystitis with bleeding and I am wondering where it is coming from.
I take 900 mg of Lithium Carbonate CR and have done for the past 25-30 years.
I am tapering off Zyprexa - down to 1.25 mg from 10 mg over the course of four months.
5 mg Valium, now down to 4 mg.
Of course it might be a prostrate problem. I just wondered if anyone on similar medication had experienced a similar problem.
I woke up with cystitis this morning and I last had it 7 February 2007. Sexual activity = zero.
Has anyone had a similar problem?

Thanks Phillipa I did call a doc and he faxed a Rx for some antibiotics to the chemist - Trimethoprim. But this is the second time in two weeks that I have been hit by cystitis. I don't think it is interstitial cystitis (IC). What I have noticed is with my Zyprexa w/d I drink much less water first thing in the morning. Zyprexa used to make me thirsty but now that I am down to 1.25 mg I don't get the same thirst. Consequently I drink much less water. Could this have something to do with it?

Two thoughts. Are you on lithium did you say sorry if I'm wrong. Other thought is less water concentrates the urine and if you do have a slight infection the less water might make it strong enough to cause an infection. But cranberry juice helps. Love Phillipa

You're right I am on Lithium, 900 mg every night.
My wife has some Cystopurin that she once bought but did not use. I guess it will work just as well for a man as for a woman. (Contains natural cranberry juice extract.) I will use that next time, at the moment I have got anti-biotics.

Have you had your kidney function checked recently. Lithium can cause kidney problems besides cystitis so I would make sure your BUN and creatinine are WNL (within normal limits)just to make sure everything with your kidneys are normal.
Since you have been on lithium as long as you have I would think you have had these tests done yearly anyway, right?
I wouldn't mess around by assuming it is a cystitis becasue it could be something else.
Recurrent urinary infections are something to be worked up by a urologist with blood tests and other tests, when necessary.

He checked my most recent blood tests and everything was wnl. I have taken to drinking more water in the morning and during the day. It is strange that I should get 2 attacks so close to each other but the doc did not seem unduly perturbed. He did give me a specimen bottle in case it should flare up again. Apparently my last urine sample showed an excess of WBC but they were unable to grow any culture.
Hopefully it won't come back.

I've cleared up recurrent problems twice now, and I'm not female (the studies are generally in women).
Make sure you read labels. Many cranberry products are diluted with other juices.

Some people prone to UTI's, aka cystitis, prefer the cranberry pills available in health food stores. Have the same effect as the juice and my understanding of how it works was by lowering the ph of the urine to prevent bacteria from setting up shop. Either way, the effect is prevention/elimination of urinary infections.
They sure are painful and once you see blood, its really a bad infection which can lead to other more severe complications like pyelonephritis, so don't ignore any of those symptoms. And drink lots of H2O which you obviously know.
I had 2 infections close together a few years ago, the next step was a workup with a IVP (Intravenouse pyelogram, shooting dye into the kidney) to r/o kidney problems so my doc, an OB/GYN took it very seriously and referred me to a urologist. Many people develop kidney damage from chronic, untreated infections. Being overly cautious is better than missing something serious.
