Urgent Emsam Q!!! What can I take for cold+flu?

Posted by UgottaHaveHope on February 21, 2007, at 13:08:47

I take 6mg of Emsam. Today I am feeling sick with a cold, fever, or flu-like symptoms. The only med I know I can take without interaction is Benadryl. Any others?

Please, please, please help.

You can take aspirin or advil for the pains and aches. Use a saline based nasal spray for congestion.

You don't need to take anything for a cold Michael. It will go away by itself. Plain acetaminophen, aspirin or ibuprofen can be used if you really think you need it. Tell the pharmacy staff you're taking EMSAM and they will double check anything they sell you is safe for use with that med.

If you are miserable enough with the cold that you really think you need something, I think it would be a good idea to call your doctor, or at least a pharmacist. And be sure your pharmacist comprehends Emsam is selegeline, an MAOI. Inexplicably, I still keep running into pharmacists who are unfamiliar with the medication.

You can take Flonase, also same as Nasacort and recently in generic form.

Also, for bad cough that keeps you up at night, I find that codeine (eg tylenol 3) helps as much as cough syrups that have proscribed meds in them.

Rest up, drink lots of waters, etc etc

Seriously, the best cold/flu remedy I ever found was a real long sleep. That takes care of the worst of it for me almost every time. Others swear by vitamin C and zinc- and I take those, too. And don't laugh, but I heard that chicken stock, ie "chicken soup", has nutrients helpful to fight cold/flu. I've gotten some relief from congestion before by taking hot baths and showers, using a humidifier, and by rubbing my chest and temples with Tiger Balm. I hope you feel better soon.

cold and flu remedies all seem to carry the MAOI warning but some are OK, get some advice on this. I do not think they are worth the money. Better to take (and cheaper too) specific meds for specific problems, if needed. Decongestants are nono's on MAOI, including many OTC sprays.

I have bad allergies and I have found some things that work well and would apply to a cold.

1) Steam (from hot water, not a cool mist)
2) Clove has powerful decongestant ability. Sniff
raw cloves or clove oil; steam + cloves works well. Effective for hours, for me. Peppermint
also has good decongestant ability. Candies or oil work, oils are better used as inhaled vapors, they both can irrittate skin if applied directly.
3) Ayre is a water based gel you apply to the inside of your nose, I use a Q-tip. It ends a sticky icky nose. Great for a raw nose. I like it more than the saline sprays or the other gel products on the market, ie Simple Saline gel and others.
4) The more water you drink, the thinner the congestion.

Ahh Michael why not??? You're doing so well. Don't let the side effects of a cold get confused with EMSAM counting on you and your magic bullet. Love Phillipa

You can take guaifenesin, a decongestant. That's the only one I know of that's safe to take. I've taken it with Nardil before when I had a bad sinus infection.

I also second (or third? fourth?) what others have said about steam, drinking lots of fluids, and inhalants such as eucalyptus, lemon, or mint oils. As someone above said, don't use them directly on the skin without diluting them with another oil (massage oil, vegetable oil, etc.) But they are good to use for inhalation. You can put together a bowl of steaming water, add a couple drops of the oil, and then tent your head over it and inhale deeply for about five to ten minutes. Keep your eyes closed, as they can be irritated by the vapors.

A neti pot is also useful. There is one you can get here in the states (I forget where you are) under the brand name Sinucleanse.

Hope you feel better soon.
