I've noticed people often use xanax against panic as needed. How long is the duration of the onset of action and how long do these protective actions last for you until the withdrawal (maybe even increase) in anxiety will begin? What is your average dosage for that? -Some people seem to have success with an as needed strategy.

Should be within about l5minutes if prn. Some people I did took xanax throughout the day. It worked well for years and then just made me tired. I do take .5 at night at bedtime with valium and lunesta. Love Phillipa

Hi SDB,
Xanax (like Valium) has a relatively rapid onset of action. Peak effects occur after about one hour. The duration of action is normally several hours eg. 6 hours - but will vary from person to person.

I wanted to be completely accurate, so I did a little research. Effects are usually felt within 20-40 minutes. It can take up to an hour to feel the full extent of its effects. The anti-panic effects of Xanax last anywhere from 2 to 6 hours, excluding the after-effects which last several more hours. The withdrawal can be difficult at times, that's why I take 1 mg early on and wait several hours before I take my second dose. If I were to take both all at once, I'd be without my next dose to counteract the symptoms of the withdrawal. The second dose obviously wears off at some point, usually late in the evening as I'm getting ready for bed. I take my Ambien, and I'm off to sleep...it's really not that bad. I should probably mention that most people seem to dose a few times a day, 3 to 4...I find that I really don't need to.

Have you ever taken the XR version of Xanax, how is it for you to stop Xanax IR immediately, have you ever experienced symptoms of tolerance, how long do you take Xanax (more than 6 weeks?) and how old are you?
