Don't Give Up..I found a new Dr., New Hope..I hope

Posted by invisiblemanpa on January 28, 2007, at 9:57:41

I gave up in 06, sick of switching meds, no help, gave in and had ECT, a major mistake. I was in a low end clinic that just wrote scripts, no real help, very unprofessional. Crashing and burning over the holidays, I was guided to contact my nice young friendly family Dr., and he personally called and got me in with a new, modern clinic, I got in with a very up to speed, nurse practioner and therapist, they both could not believe my past treatments, scripts, and especially being given ECT., the said only vegetative or catatonic patients only....anyway....they so far have been great, listening, explaining, working on new med changes, not afraid of benzos, did not blow off my struggle with anxiety...they both put that as the first to get under control, then work on the depression...I still fear I have had permanent brain damage due to the ECT, my cognitive abilities are shot....but maybe I can at least get back to some kind of life again with the help of my new med team......I hope....I Was lucky, if it wasn't for my family Dr., I would still be Dr., shopping and with state insurance my options were almost nil except for maybe a few regional clinics, everywhere I called, it was we don't take that insurance or no new patients...I got lucky....keep shopping if you are not being treated.....make sure your Doc is in the here and now...not 10 year old med knowledge like so many are.....I hate to say it, but the younger the Dr's, the better the treatment......I guess they get burned out just like other stressful careers.....but it is our health they are dealing with..

Funny I like the older docs as they have used benzos all the new ones seem to want to use the atypical antipsychotics first. Anyone know why? As I haven't raised my benzos in over 30 years. And I don't want diabetes. Love Phillipa

I wasn't judging, just my own trials and tribulations with Dr's., SSRI's, benzos, etc....I talked to the new Dr. about the antipsychotics and she really felt they would not benefit my anxiety disorder, where as the Dr that I got away from wanted me on Seroquel...young, old...as long as they are keeping up to date and on the cutting edge of psych info...the young lady that I saw just got excited talking about all of the new info out there..she said the brain was the up and coming science where we would see major help with positive impacts on our struggles...and she said to that there were many many med combos, never to give up, don't look back on what didn't work....start with a clean slate.........time will tell for me, but it was nice to be treated with respect, have quality time spent with me and walked away feeling that maybe the darkness and anxiety were days away from consuming me totally.........e

Sorry! In Pa., I have had a lot of luck before with nurse practioners, family practice, but just excellent, much more sensitive to the patients needs and seemingly just as knowledgeable as the dr's..I've found them here and in the midwest so I am sure there are some good ones in NC........a lot of the hospitals now have posting for find a dr....I went right down the list, yes, no, yes, nom no.......pictures, plus credentials....try the larger clinics....

I'm new to all of this, so I apologize for my ignorance. But Phillipa, you mentioned diabetes; do benzo's contribute to the onset of diabetes?

I was not aware of this, and perhaps I should do more research, but I take 4 mgs. of Xanax XR a day and have been for quite sometime. Diabetes runs in my family...

Any info would be appreciated.

No not benzos atypical antipsychotics particularily zyprexa. I think there is a lawsuit on zyprexa and diabetes. Someone correct me if I'm wrong please. Love Phillipa
