haloperidol

Posted by alienatari on January 25, 2007, at 20:20:47

Been on haloperidol for a while now but ive had enough of it. On 5mg and since starting it Ive had to get glasses, am so constipated that I need to take 2 different laxatives every few days just to go to the toilet once a week, muscle spasms that hurt quite a lot mainly in my stomach, totally impotent, memory problems .etc .etc I could go on and on. My Pdoc wont let me stop it but Im stopping it on my own now and I have lowered the dose to 2.5mg. I feel like crap though. Anyone know a good typical antipsychotic for paranoia as I have been on most of the typicals and I dont want to try clozapine.
Thanks and take care

paranoia? if it is only that, have you tried the ADs yet? why the typical antipsychotics?

I would say the same, why the typicals, unless you mistyped and said you've been through most of the atypicals. Clozaril I would agree is not the best solution but is a gold standard if you have extreme paranoia/schizophreniform conditions. Otherwise, a comparable dose would be a medium dose of Zyprexa/Seroquel or if you're concerned about lipids, Geodon, since if you've been on Haldol I imagine you don't have much problem with akathisia.

There's also the old drug for paranoid depression, amoxapine, which is kind of like Symbyax but a bit more ancient. I know someone who uses Wellbutrin + Seroquel for paranoid depression.

Invega (paliperidone) is coming out, which is the extended release of Risperdal's metabolite, or you could just go cheaper with Risperdal, which at some dose crosses over and is frankly comparable to its chemical cousin Haldol.

But I would try Geodon first, or possibly Abilify.

Hi Alien :)

You can't go on like this on the haloperidol. I do think you should reduce the dose but you must do so gradually or else you will feel even worse! Do you think it is time to try Seroquel again? I know you're scared but I think it might really help.

Thanks that was very informative. I have been on all the atypicals in Australia except Clozapine.

haloperdiol sucks but I dont want to take clozapine. Been on Abilify and Respirdone. Ive been on so many meds its rediculous. Right now im on Valium/Clomipramine/Haloperidol/Lithium. Lithium and Clomip are doing great for my OCD/Depression but I cant find anything to work for my psychosis. :(

My Pdoc wont let me try seroquel anymore :( I asked him and he said no. Oh well. I will ask him again as haloperidol sucks bad for me.

Take care

I dont mean to scare you, but make sure you're monitored CAREFULLY on haldol+lithium..that particular combo has killed some patients. If your doc isn't going to work with you, you may want to get a new one...if he's pushing Haldol on you, then you may NEED a new one, b/c Haldol sucks.

Lithium can help with psychosis. Adding in depakote, trileptal, tegretol might help. You dont necessarily **need** an antipsychotic, especially if its just paranoia w/o any other signs of florid psychosis.
