It made me much more depressed. I know that doesn't answer your question, but in a way it does. Sometimes we respond to meds in weird ways. Keep a mood journal if you can. That really helps. Are you taking it as a mood stabiliser? I get irritable and I found that Trileptal helps with that. I have gone off it and the irritability comes back.

No, it was as a mood stabiliser. It really made me depressed. I was off to a bad start though, because I was accidently prescribed Surmontil (a tricyclic antidepressant). And no I didn't sue. :)Anyhow, I got as far as 150 mg and noticed my mood getting worse and worse. The worst part is that you have to tritrate it so slowly so there is all this anticipation ... and for what? DEPRESSION.

That's my story.

Lamictal worked really well for me when I was taking benzos with it. As a monotherapy Lamictal seemed to make me very irritable and agitated. I felt like killing someone. I also had wicked insomnia at that time and I suspect Lamictal was causing it.

Maxie sorry it didn't work out for you. So many others swear by it to boost an ad. As a mood stabaizer I have no idea. Not bipolar or whatever. Love Phillipa

Never post here but this caught my eye..

I just started lamictal 10 days ago so cant say much on that yet, however...

lithium definitely is having that effect on me. Since starting it, I have absolutely no patience and snap and people left and right. I know theyre very different drugs, but both mood stabalizers.. not sure if that helps at all. Just thought I'd throw it out there.

It's okay. It was two years ago. I've moved on. :)

Hello. I'm new to this site, and have some questions about lamictal, namely, have any women taking it experienced changes in their menstrual cycles, or other hormonal/endocrine problems (e.g., thyroid)? I've been taking lamictal for 2 years, and in that time, my periods have stopped, my face-shape has changed (swollen, rounded, though I have not gained a significant amount of weight), and now my hair is falling out, which I don't know if is from the drug itself, or due to changes in estrogen levels etc. I have been in consultation w/ an OB-GYN for mos., and am seeing an endocrinologist as soon as he can fit me in, but I just wanted to see if anyone else has had similar experiences. My meds-doc is on maternity leave so I can't talk to her right now, but she is such a lamictal advocate, she has been reluctant to believe all of these changes are from the drug, though my OB-Gyn seems to think they are. I have been resisting the idea of going off lamictal because it has helped my depression so much, but my hair falling out at this alarming rate is the last straw. Does anyone have any experience going off lamictal, and how quickly or slowly did you titrate?

Sorry so long, but I'm pretty scared right now.

Make sure the endo really checks your thyroid as hair falling out is a sign of thyroid problems. And if you're starting menopause lower estrogen can cause it too. Love Phillipa ps and welcome to babble.

Dear Carol S,
Lamictal is the best solution that I have found for my long-term depression and bipolar issues. However, I have noticed some hormonal effects while taking the drug. For instance, I cannot take any form of birth control pills. The change in my estrogen levels alters the way the drug works in my body. I notice cognitive effects, weight gain, and feel ill. I usually change my dose of lamictal around my period to level off similar effects. What dose are you taking? Have you noticed any changes when you reduce your dose? SP
