Cymbalta Evaluation

Posted by Sonny Liston on December 16, 2006, at 15:14:43

I been reading mostly negative experience about Cymbalta. It's seems like a finicky drug to dose correctly. Some people find it sedating some find it energizing. Some take it AM, some take it PM. I am also reading withdrawl stinks almost Effexor like.

I have read some prior posts. What is the up to date verdict for those posters who have used Cymbalta or continue to use it?

I may have to try it myself..........

I am at 30 mg and do fairly well. 60 mg made me crazy, too much! 30 gives me enough seratonin re-uptake and a little norepinephrine to offset the ssri blahs. I feel more normal than on ssri meds. Adds a little anxiety but it seems necessary.SSRI meds just don,t do it for me any more, they make me competely bored and lifeless.

Tried it twice first time got to 60mg and stayed for quite a few months no problem stopping it. Only thing I noticed was it eliminated back pain. Second time I couldn't tolerate 30mg. Felt like my head would explode and couldn't cry. So stopped it. Love Phillipa wondering right now as I write if my thyroid was starting to become hyper as it did and adjusting now.

I do not qualify for a valid appraisal of cymbalta. I am so sensitive to most meds. But I can share my experience.

My first day on cymbalta was great. That norepinephrine kick was just the thing I needed. The problem was that by day 3 it was all gone and I already had side effects I could not tolerate, so waiting a month or so for the real effects to kick in was just not possible. I made it one week up to 30 beads. Side effects for me were heavy sleepiness, sexual dysfunction, anorexia, ringing in the ears, feeling extremely cold, and emotional numbness. You would laugh if I told you the dose. 10 beads, which is 1mg. Actually, I saw an abstract at pubmed.com where a patient did poorly at 37.5mg effexor but she reached remission at 18mg. So I guess I'm not the only one sensitive. Sometimes more is not better.

Anyway, the only real way to find out how cymbalta goes is to try. Mileage varies a lot. And hopefully it will be tolerable enough that you can give it a fairer trial than I did.

Short lived trial...
first week on 20 mg, stayed in bed most of day no motivation, just really tired.

Second week, dose increased to 30, tiredness turned into suicidal thoughts, more fear, inability to do anything, even simple things became huge obstacles.

That was my experience. Too bad.

Yes still on Emsam about 30+ days now, no major side effects or decline in depression (holding steady) which always makes me really hate drug trials. Nothing worse than getting more depressed from the drugs themselves.

Cymbalta has worked for many, so one person's experience can't be seen as a negative for oneself. Are you on it or just thinking of trying it?

I know that sucks. I was thinking of trying it. But I don't feel going thru a trial and taper 50 mgs of Zoloft doesn't do much for me and 100 mgs does give me energy but also flattens me w/not much sex drive. You know the story w/the SSRI's. Nothing new there...
