Clomipramine and Abilify for Dexedrine psychosis

Posted by temoigneur on December 8, 2006, at 16:35:26

Hi, Ben here, I've been diagosed with MDD, OCD - and some delusions/schizoaffective features and ADHD, (Inattentive)... I know it might be foolish for me to ask for advice with a more complicated case like this online..... :~) however, when I take dexedrine I have lazer like focus, and do well in my studies.. for a couple days, but after two days I go absolutely psychotic... I feel I have to do masochistic things for atonement for great sins I've committed - (nothing too much more than your average run of the mill sinner - but at the time I'm convinced I must be punished). This is before I went on clomipramine 150 mg. Since being on anafranil my OCD and delusions - if they are delusions are completely gone but I'm a vegetable.. I just want to sleep 18hrs a day... the abilify has helped with that.. I used to be a gifted pianist... and wanted to be a nurse practitioner... My psychiatrist is really quite good, and said that once I am stabilized on clomipramine, he may be willing to try dexedrine again to see if I had the same reaction. Currently I'm on abilify and find it helps with energy, OCD, and mood stability. Does anyone have any thoughts on whether it may be possible that now on the clomipramine and Abilify I might be more immune to dexedrine's side effects.

Thank you

Neuroleptics tend to reduce reactions to antipsychotics...its possible that, w/ the abilify, you could handle the dexedrine, and benefit from it, but not become so over-stimulated that you lapse into a semi-psychotic state. You could also try Provigil in the meantime (less risk of psychosis).

The only way to know for sure would be to 1) stabilizer and 2)try a couple test doses to see what happens...

some docs use weaker stimulants in ADD/ADHD and depression. Provigil is one, but also there are older diet pills (Didrex, Bontril, Phentermine) that sometimes pop up in med combos for ADD...although they are similar to amphetamine (and some, like Didrex, break down into both amphetamine and methamphetamine, while Bontril breaks down into Preludin), there might be enough of a difference to give you focus and energy w/o psychosis.

Good luck.

Stay away from the dexedrine even if a doctor would be silly enough to give you more. Getting delusional and having psychosis of any sort screams DO NOT GIVE THIS PERSON DOPAMINE.

I definitely think it's possible that the clomipramine and abilify -could- allow you to tolerate the dexedrine. Sounds to me like your doc knows what he's doing. In large part, there's no way to know what's going to happen for any given individual--reactions are different--you just have to try and see. Glad to hear the abilify helps--since it's an antipsychotic, I bet it might help protect you from the amphetamine effects too.

PS. Clomipramine usually becomes easier to take over a period of weeks, I am told, though it's often difficult at the beginning.
