I don't think cymbalta has FDA approval for OCD (it might; check out the official website) but antidepressants in general can usually help w/ anxiety and OCD and depression...some docs think there is some sort of common underlying problem in the brain with these disorders, and some think that antidepressants tend to induce apathy, which can improve OCD and anxiety and depression, at least on the official measures of these disorders (real life benefits, I imagine, vary considerably from person to person).

What all have you tried so far? Apparently, stimulants can be good for OCD--dexedrine can be as effective as some antidepressants, and it can help w/ underlying depression and fatigue or ADHD-type issues, too.

Good luck!

I was switched to Cymbalta when I was taking Luvox after it came out. I'm still on it, but it doesn't really block obsessive thinking very well like Luvox does (which I think is one of the better SSRIs for OCD), which is the only major symptom of OCD left over from earlier days when OCD was the primary problem. Secondary depression resulting from another psychiatric disorder is what I currently take it for and, though Cymbalta takes a long time to really hit that kick in point, it does work for it with occasional breakthrough depression.

Only seen a paucity of positive responses to this drug. Far and few between.

I would go straight to Anafranil....

Anafranil is fraught with many of the unpleasant side effects of TCAs though it is partially classified as an "SRI". I would try Luvox, Paxil, and possibly Celexa/Lexapro for obsessive thinking before I tried Anafranil.

Anafranil can cause sweating and all sorts of problems -- granted it is a dartgun for some tough cases of OCD but an SSRI plus low amounts of Seroquel also are used in tough cases.

From what I hear in this room and other rooms and what I have read it does not seem that Cymbalta is very good drug for OCD.

Currently I take Prozac 40mg a day plus 1 mg of Clonazepam.
Prozac has caused me some stomach irritations and some sexual problems but these problems are not severe or causing dispairment for me. As long as I stay at 40 mg not 60 mg the side effect can be managed.

I agree w/Jay. Anafranil is old school and dirty.

Ask your pdoc about low dose Wellbutrin to combat your ssri induced sexual probs. It works.

It depends on what sort of stomach irritations -- if they are caused by acid buildup from side effects of the medication, generic Zantac might help or similar H2 blockade medications -- ask your doctor.

If its nausea, various forms of ginger are a good weak 5HT3 blockade (most of your serotonin in your body is in your stomach).

I have very severe OCD, and Cymbalta was a complete mess for me. Fatigue, insomnia, urinary problems, sexual side effects, absolute elimination of appetite, significant weight loss . . . My doctor took me off it a couple days ago when he saw what I looked like.

In a sense, Cymbalta did help with the OCD--it gave me so many other problems that some of my OCD symptoms were minor in comparison.

Wellbutrin can help some people with SSRI sexual side effects, but more often it does not, IMO.
