Brain Flash!

I'll bet dollars2donuts, don't need as much Valium (10mg 3x day) alongside Effexor-XR (re: its anti-anxiety properties), and this is why I'm feeling the 'Don't Give A Sh*t' syndrome!

Anyone think?

This is very possible. Both GABA (Valium) and serotonin (Effexor) play roles to help prevent excessive excitation (fear) in the amygdala. Using both together act at least additively if not synergistically.

Possibly. However, this might also be apathy, a usually unwanted side effect being produced elsewhere in the brain by the serotonin reuptake inhibiting properties of Effexor.

Overall, is this a good thing or a bad thing?

It might be that your new-found lack of anxiety has given you a respite that, although normal, feels abnormally worry-free, and thus is perhaps being confused with apathy.

Hard to know.

I take a look around my place, and w/o a doubt, 'bad', 4me.

It's apathy! My biggest worry this past week was an 'unannounced visitor'! I wanted to ask Phillipa to come for a visit, but then I thought 'OMG .. she'd think I was a slob'!

Was tellin' daughter last eve, how long had been since did my dishes, and her response, w/ a smirk, was, "Well maybe that's a good thing Mom!!??", and she laughed.

I guess it's not always great 4 those around me, but 'I need to worry re: cockroaches (yikes!) or other possible consequences of apathy', to feel in control of my life.

Yep, I'm pretty much type A, things 'clean' & 'in their proper place', including 'me'.

Tks for shedding light on pharmacology of these two meds together!

Plan 2 make some alteration in regimen here.

I'm on Eff-XR 150q.d., Valium 10t.i.d., Lyrica 75h.s. (Cut back Valium to b.i.d. today.)

I believe Lyrica works pharmacologically a bit like a benzo, making the anxiolytic properties of my regimen stronger.

If correct, need add something in, or make a substantial change.

Only get 15min (out of 40days) Friday to 'communicate w/ P', so would appreciate opinion from you, or if U not feelin' up to, another 'pharmo educated babbler' here.

Glad see peeps share re: experience w/ EMSAM.

bestwishes, cf

Hi CF.

I'm sorry I didn't get to this post sooner.

Bad Scott.

I'm not sure they have identified all the things Lyrica does, but I don't believe it has been shown to act at the GABA receptor as do BZDs. It kind of squelches nerve impulses by blocking calcium influx and neurotransmitter release. My first thought is that Lyrica is not contributing to the apathy. I can't be sure, though. It is somewhat new territory, and you might have no choice but to experiment.

Maybe Wellbutrin.
