Hypothetically, a medical doctor treated me w/ Ritalin as a child, on during school time and off during summer; back and forth.
As a teen, it was discontinued. But I was still called busy, and called 'bu*y' or 'b*sy' by everyone. I never saw a P. I was pretty much 'hyperactive' or 'manic' all the time. I was even suicidal. Still, I never saw a P.
What's my dx? Am I 'ADHD w/ emphasis on hyperactivity' or 'bipolar w/ predominantly hypermania'?

I'd find a doctor who will consider revisting stimulant treatment. If a stimulant treats your symptoms better, then I'd go with that. I'd be willing to think that stimulant treatment would give you a better quality of life than mood stabilizer treatment.

I'm on a mood stabilizer ... high dose Depakote ... and the quality of my life is still hyperactivity, or should I call it, mania.
Depakote changes nothing in my behavior.
I'm still moving 2fast, talking 2fast, leaving tasts either untouched or unfinished.
Dealing w/ people close to me is especially difficult as they become overwhelmed w/ my 'zest', whereas meeting someone on the street or dealing w/ them for a short period of time is great as they find my 'zest' attractive.
I've been labeled and steered in one direction ... bipolar w/ hypermania.
I feel trapped.

Mania is less about what you are doing, and more about how you feel. People can be disorganized and hyperactive yet not have a markedly elevated mood, ie no change in affect, and therefore not really manic.
The two are often confused, but I guess the acid test is whether a stimulant does more for you than a mood stabilizer.
It could be a comorbidity in which case, a combination of mood stabilizer and stimulant may be the best option (?)

In mania, one's mood is usually excited, agitated, expansive or elated. Overexcitement is common in the absense of elavated mood.

Tks L. The combo of a mood stabilizer and an illegal stimulant work very well, .. and since the P knows this, he's very unlikely to prescribe a legal stimulant to discern hyperactivity from mania.

I think what you're saying is one's mood is not particularly elevated when they are experiencing hyperactivity.(?)
