sudafed + atenolol ok?

Posted by saturn on October 20, 2006, at 22:06:13

I've brought this up previously in reference to combining sympathomimetics with beta blockers. The risk of hypertensive crisis (due to unopposed beta blockade) seems from what I can gather to be largely theoretical.

Has anyone taken like 25 mg atenolol and 30 mg sudafed (or similar doses)? I'd be interested to hear experiences. Thanks.

I take 50mg of atenolol and 45mgs of dexedrine a day(thats 9 pills). I havent had any problem and it seems to be a semi common combination.

Intuitively they would seem to cancel each other out in terms of heart effects.

Drugs.com interaction checker mentions nothing other than not drinking orange juice (!) with atenolol noting the peak plasma can be reduced by nearly 50%.

30mg of sudafed is a child's dose. 60mg is an adult dose, and even at that is only useful in some people. I have found use for minor ear pain/congestion due to some odd sinus issue or other. At times I may have to actually take propranolol to counteract the heart/anxiety issues but usually not.

I've never used the stupid Sudafed PE but from what I've heard netwise from sinus sufferers is that it is useless. &*&@ meth people. I've stockpiled a small quantitiy of regular pseudoephedrine for the day that even the left coast turns it into a prescription drug.

yeah it's crazy. I've been using sudafed for over 15 years and all of the sudden it's this big deal. Then they should just make it RX only. Sometimes I'm tempted to ask for 35 boxes at the pharmacy just out of spite. My understanding is that the vast majority of meth is not even made from pseudoephedrine. Even 30 mg clears up my nose and sometimes helps me think a little clearer. Peace.

Yes, it is a phenethylamine compound in the amphetamine family. While definately not as strong as its chemical cousin compound ephedrine, it can make -some- people even without anxiety disorders have what appears to be an anxious syndrome. Perfectly normal reaction.

This is largely the effects it has on the heart and it also affects noradrenaline. Hence, adrenaline rushes, excitability, etc. Could be lessened with a small amount of propranolol, but eventually one probably would cancel out the other.

Well, that's what clandestine labs have made us have to go pretty please at the counters for Sudafed and the response also to put out the practically useless Sudafed PE. But I would say 1/100 the intensity give or take of speed, maybe a bit more. It is a vasoconstrictor, which constricts blood vessels principally in the sinuses but systemwide basically and thus causes an increase in blood pressure.
