Zyprexa - Corpulent, Constipated, Castrated

Posted by Guy on September 23, 2006, at 12:29:33

I call Zyprexa my "Triple C" medication. Unfortunately, nothing else seems to give me the kind of sleep I need to reduce my chronic pain and anxiety. In fact, I become suicidal every time I try to switch to other meds, including benzos. I don't think there's much I can do about the weight gain or the sexual side effects. However, I'm hoping someone has a suggestion as to how I might deal with severe constipation. I know this might sound trivial to some, but for me, it's a source of great discomfort...I just feel very unhealthy.

psyllium husks are excellent, just spread them on your cereal or mix some in a glass of water or orange juice, great idea declan. Cheap natural way to get things moving again, I have used them alot over the years.

If zyprexa really is last ditch (I mean, after antihistamines, antidepressants, benzos, ambien/lunesta/etc., and herbal stuff), then I suggest...

1) see if you can add in metformin--may help with the weight stuff, although its more effective if you start them both @ the same time. Talk to your doc.

2) ask about amantidine or meridia--again, helps with weight

3) try the Zydis. they dissolve in your mouth, largely bypassing the serotonin receptors in your gut. You may be able to use a lower dose and see fewer side effects

Good luck!

Well I guess I was wrong about orally disintegrating medications, they may actually bypass some of the gut by absorption into the mucosa of the mouth. Still, some will inevitably end up into the stomach depending on the delivery system and the compliance of the patient to correct usage.

First, are you being really consistent about the basics: enough fiber, eg psyllium or bran cereals with high levels of "insoluble" (eg, wheat)-- making sure its not the "soluble" (eg oat)-- fiber.

Drinking lots of water(or other fluids). (That's the hardest, but very important.)

Vegetables. (fiber again)

and all that? I mean being really consistent, even to the point of just making yourself do it everyday?

Then,

from what I've learned

Have you tried Miralax? It's a prescription drug is one of the most effective drugs for constipation, even that caused by need for codeine, morphine-derivatives etc., which also cause constipation.

You said that you had chronic pain. Are you taking anything there that could be contributing to the constipation?

Just wondered. There are some drugs in development to deal with it, but they haven't been okayed by the FDA. I have concerns about why not-- but anyway, they haven't been.
