antipsychotics, akathasia, anxiety, ocd

Posted by xbunny on September 19, 2006, at 11:00:17

I have been on pericyazine 75mg for a month and it has been a seriously harsh ride. I am seeing my psychiatrist on thursday (got a cancellation appt) and am wondering if any of you have any advice for me. Since ramping up the pericyazine my anxiety has become alot worse, I feel like a constantly crawling out of my skin and that my skin is crawling. I have become obsessive about washing my hands, germs, bugs, robbers, leaking roofs, work, the oven. I get super anxious about anything my mind can latch onto. I really need something which will calm me down. On the flip side I havent really had any psychotic experiences (no visions or visitations). I am at a loss what to do, I had expected the antipsychotic would have chilled me out but it didnt atall. Help!

sometimes antipsychotics make things worse...a lot worse. If you ramp up the dosage enough, you can end up inducing/worsening OCD and worsening/causing pretty bad social withdrawal...its like that study where they found higher-end Haldol dosages caused a sort of social phobia, and zyprexa can induce OCD.

Step 1 would be to lower the neuroleptic and do something about the akathisia--dipenhydramine, valium, propranolol, whatever.

Step 2 would be re-assesing your overall situation: do you still need an antipsychotic? if so, would a reduced dosage do the trick?

Good luck!

Joy of Joys I found a strip of diazepam I didnt know I had so certainly I am hitting this step already!

This is where the problem lies, I do think I need an antipsychotic and at the previous reduced dosage I was getting symptoms (hence the dosage increase). So thus my problem is that either I have symptoms or that I have this extreme anxiety, neither is manageable. I have tried taking procyclidine for the akathasia but to get any kind of help I need at least 10mg this gives me painfully dry mouth, unremitting constipation and doesnt hit the OCD type stuff just the akathasia. I can take diazepam but the psychiatrist has unequivably stated that he wont prescribe it.
I guess I need either an antipsychotic which wont cause akathasia or a combination of drugs.

Best bet might be to try another antipsychotic if you think you need one. The one least likely (though not guaranteed) to cause akathisia and stuff is seroquel. Talk about calming.

Zyprexa might be an option too. For the first 4 years I took it it was amazingly calming and tame, but now in the 6th year I find I have had to reduce the dose because higher doses seem too activating and make me very nervous, kind of like the way you describe.

If you want an amazingly calming antipsychotic with the least risk of weird stuff, seroquel.

Yeah just researched seroquel and it is used primarily for Bipolar and schophreniz. At least that what google says. Love Phillipa
