Effexor XR Side Effects Ringing in the Ears

Posted by Frankie2120 on September 19, 2006, at 9:37:05

I have been on Lexapro for about 2 years to deal with Depression / anxiety... and although it did a great job with with depression it wasn't helping with the anxiety at all... I recently started taking Effexor xr starting out with 37.5 for a week... then up to 75mg for a week... and i've been at 150mg now for two weeks... The sleepyness is starting to go away... but this Ringing in my ears is not going away... I am starting to feel positive effects towards social anxiety so I'm willing to put up with the ringing... however has anyone else dealt with this ringing... and does it ever stop...!!! :)

any thoughts....???

For me it comes and goes. I haven't found anyway to deal with it. It's not too bad for me. I just live with it, or listen to my MP3 more

Don't give up on it yet, the side effects are the worst at the beginning but hang in there, most of them will subside. It's worth it!

Thanks... I couldn't find anywhere that ringing in the ears was a side effect until talking with someone else that was taking it... It's already starting to come and go and i seem to notice it only when I pay attention... another strange positive affect is I've been a smoker for about 6 years... and I used to smoke like every hour at work... before i'd go to a meeting... before i'd go out onto the shop floor to talk to people... (I'm a process engineer)... I havn't had any urge to smoke in the last 4 day's at work... it's strange but they just went away... And when I used to be at the gym i'd hate when people would be near me and I would get really agitated... that's pretty much gone away too... For me Effexor xr is working pretty good so far after the first 6 weeks....

I have dealt with ringing in the ears for years and it is no fun. One thing I have learned, with myself anyway, is that what makes it worse is change. Any kind of medication change will make it worse. But then after a couple months when things have settled into place, the ringing subsides. It is during the transition period that it is particularly bad.

Since you've been on another med for a couple years and are now getting on a different one, there will be considerable changes going on in there for a while and the ringing should settle down later. My best guess would be that it won't go away, but that it will subside in a time frame of about 6 weeks to 12 weeks.

With me, any medication change always results in louder ringing. It takes a while for things to settle down. Any dosage change does it too.

If you do not have a history of tinnitus and your ears were quiet to start with, then that might be an early sign that effexor is not good for you in that sense. If it helps with your other symptoms, it might be a price you'll have to deal with.

I was on Paxil for about 10 days when the ringing in the ears started. I thought I would lose mind! It was suggested to me by a Nutrionist that Red Clover Bark and Milk Thistle 3x per day for 3 weeks would get rid of the ringing. It's something to do with residue of the med settling in the liver. No matter- it worked!

`` Interesting... I'll have to check that out... I've been on the Effexor XR for 2 months now... the ringing is no where near as loud but it's still there... I don't notice it much anymore but I'm gonna look into what you took to help with the ringing... :)

Thank you for your responce....
