SSRI induced hypomania: what are the symptoms?????

Posted by qbsbrown on August 23, 2006, at 1:38:15

I'm looking for those w/ experience in this area. My PDOC now believes that I might be experiencing this.
She assumed that w/ my OCD tendancies that we had to get high on an SSRI immediately (40-60mgs celexa), and now 20mgs lexapro.

But I found that going down to 10-15 of lexapro decreased my anxiety significantly. Could be in public places easier etc, although my physical anxiety was worse, probably just due to the drop i would imagine.

I'd love to hear experiences.

Thanks,

Brian

Hi Brian.

My own experiences of SSRI-induced hypomania can be summed up as follows (in no particular order):

***Elevated mood (above and beyond euthymia).

***Pressure of speech.

***Increase in goal-orientated activity.

***Flight of ideas (ie a rush of racing, often very creative thoughts).

***Increaded sociability.

***Increased motivation and 'energy'.

***Distractibility.

***Marked increase in self-esteem.

***Decreased need for sleep.

***After a period of time - possible irritability.

***Participation in 'risky' behaviours (unsafe sex, excessive gambling etc).

The risk is of course that hypomania has the potential to develop into full-blown mania - not good.

I personally enjoyed my bouts of hypomania (as do many people) but after a while they can become wearing and emotionally taxing, and a 'crash' is never far away.

Take care,

Jah.

These are the ones that I'm experiencing

I don't enjoy most of them. So now my debate is to go to 10 or 15 mgs lexapro. And i wonder if splitting doses helps prevents this more.

Thoughts?

Brian

if SSRI dose is too high; anxiety coul be higher??

I understand that many are low dose responders. What if you took a low dose responder and but them on a high one. Could that have a counteractive effect.

I once responded beautifully to 10mg paxil, but doc wanted to go higher and higher. As w/ lexapro now, she wants 20-30, when i feel they're too high. Once i lower them, anxiety such as going to movies, eating lunch in public etc lowers, but physical anxiety increases, perhaps just the initial drop i guess.

Thanks,

Brian
