can you help me? Wellbutrin XL

Posted by spriggy on August 15, 2006, at 0:34:32

I am going to talk with my dr. in the next week about getting on an antidepressent.

If you recall, I had a horrible experience with Lexapro about 2 years ago.

I tried Wellbutrin once but I quit out of fear of the side effects ( I have finally quit reading the side effects profile and giving myself all the symptoms, ROFL)..

Here is my questions:

1) I took Wellbutrin 2 years ago one time on a Wednesday morning- on that Friday night ( 2 days later) I had a horrific panic attack ( but a lot was going on in my life that was traumatic) and then spent 5 days not eating and hardly sleeping.

I always related this to the Wellbutrin but lately I've been wondering if it could even be possible to have a reaction over 2 days later or if it was simply the trauma at the time in my life and my physical illness instead???

AND, since I had such a bad time on SSRI's ( became suicidal) I am really concerned to go that route again.

I have read that Wellbutrin does help some people with low energy ( and I have fibromyalgia) and even some fibromayglia support forums say that Wellbutrin has helped with the pain associated w/fibro as well.

I have horrificly low energy right now, unmotivated and have been slipping the past few weeks into a depression.

I am crying several times a day, feel a lot of guilt and hopelessness, and am unmotivated.

These were my signs before when I fell into depression.

I'm also feeling very angry/resentful over stupid things' that I know are unreasonable.

I know that I need to do something and get some help before this gets worse.

I have two children, one is autistic, and my husband is a pastor. I can't afford to be this way with all that is on my plate.

So... Wellbutrin XL is my first prospect to speak with my dr about.

Any thoughts????

I took WB XL for about a month or so. It gave me more energy. Unfortunately for me, the same mode of action (norepi) that gave energy also increased my anxiety and panic reactions. For some, this is a startup finding and does balance out for them.

At one time, TCA's were the preferred AD for fibro folks. That might be a class of meds to research that could help you with several of your struggles. Just a thought....

Hey Spriggy!

Wellbutrin won't do you any favours in the anxiety department I'm afraid. Certainly when I tried it, I got horrible anxiety, much more than I had previously - I stopped after a couple of weeks because I got hives and I, too, freaked out about side effects.

Its a real pain in the butt, because generally things that help with energy and motivation also tend to exacerbate exisiting anxiety - well things in the conventional field anyhow.

Now, you might want to try some alternative things. I'm currently taking Rhodiola rosea which is pretty good at uplifting mood and giving energy. Or the usual like SJW, or tyrosine perhaps. Anyhow, babblemail me if you want anymore info about these, particulary re: rhodiola.

Of course, there are plenty other conventional antidepressants out there, besides Lex and Wellbutrin.

Kind regards

Meri

BTW what kind of pastor is your husband, I mean what church type thing?

Hi,

Sorry to hear your having a hard time. If SSRIs are a bust for you than it probably makes sense to give a dopamine/norepinephrine med like wellbutrin a try. I too suffer from chronic pain and a profound lack of energy. I gave wellbutrin a brief run last year and found that it did provide some pain relief within an hour of the first dose. Unfortunately, it didn't give me any energy boost. In fact, it made me more sleepy. In hindsight I think I may have thrown in the towel too soon. The sleepiness side effect may have passed had I stuck with it longer. Well I'm about to give it another run. I still have a bottle of generic bupropion SR 100mg tablets and I'm going to start taking them again tomorrow morning. I've been trying the "natural" approach and taking large amounts of the amino acid tyrosine (precursor to dopamine and norepinephrine) and that's helped some. But I can't lose anymore years. If the wellbutrin/bupropion doesn't work then I guess I'll reluctantly have to go to the TCA's again. But not elavil. No way...

Good luck.
Paul

My husband is the senior pastor of a non denominational church ( Christian).

We actually planted ( started this church up) one year ago.

I found out today this bad feeling of "fatigue" and feeling sick is likely due to my Strep infection..

I haven't been feeling good for 2 weeks ( fatigue, depression, sore throat, etc..) but I thought it was just a "flare" of the fibromyalgia.

Went to the dr. today and my white count was " extremely elevated" and strep was positive.

That explains some things.

It's hard to know when you are just "normal" sick or sick sick.

ROFL

I think I'll give Wellbutrin a try.

anyone know how long it takes to get the real effect and see the side effect of anxiety disappear?
