Could a single Emsam patch be worn for two days?

Posted by Ame-Sans-Vie on August 10, 2006, at 7:34:10

Just thought I'd pose this question out of curiosity. During the near two weeks I've been using Emsam, I haven't had any difficulty getting the patch to stay put. Well, I did at first, but quickly discovered that applying it to my upper thigh ensured that it would not "lift" at all throughout the day, even while showering.

So my question is this: the 20mg Emsam patches deliver ~6mg per 24 hours, right? So, in theory, I should be able to wear one patch for two days at a time and get ~12mg over that 48 hour period. Or for three days and receive approximately 18mg, for that matter. Am I wrong? I'd appreciate if anyone has any feedback on this!

Cheers,
Michael

Without doing the calculus to demonstrate it, the delivery of the drug wouldn't work that way. The flux of the drug from the patch to the skin is determined by its concentration in the patch, which constantly diminishes as it diffuses into the body transdermally.

Nice try!

It can be worn for 48 hrs., but it'll only work for 24 hrs.
