Hi people.
Here in the UK EMSAM is unavailable - and seemingly will remain so for the foreseeable future. Even IDIS can't source it.
Therefore my best hope is to consult an American pdoc - as I have done in the past.
Anyway, what I'd like to know is: What is the approx. cost of a month's supply of EMSAM patches? Here in the UK NHS prescriptions are heavily subsidised but obviously in the US I will have to pay the going rate. What is this?

Selegiline [l-deprenyl] is the same chemical as Emsam; see if it is offered in the UK.

But that's oral. I like the idea of a patch you can take off if you're having side effects you can't live with. And if I have too if my doc will let me I'll take money out of savings. The idea of a patch takes the fear away for me. But that's just me Love phillipa

Unfortunately, the side effects don't go away the moment you take off the patch. The stuff builds up in your system and you can have side effects a long time after stopping. Cecilia

The side effects don't creep in until about week 3-4. For me they took about 7 days to go away. The first 2 weeks were great for me but seriously downhill after that. I got several weeks worth of samples from my pdoc.

I do not get your point. You have the option as you live in the US, to take either. The UK does not.

For me the side effects started about the 3rd week, progressively got worse. With this med (as with Nardil for me) just because you don't get side effects right away doesn't mean you won't get them. MAOI's can build up gradually in your system. It was probably 2 weeks after my last patch before I was back to my "usual" (still high unfortunately) level of anxiety/insomnia and the eye pain had gone away (after prescription eye drops). It sounds so nice in theory, rip off the patch, side effects gone, but I can tell you it DEFINITELY doesn't work that way. Cecilia

Nor does the transdermal system, which lowers the amount of amphetamine byproducts produced, improve
sleeping issues. It does not seem amphetamine byproducts were the cause of the sleeping problems to begin with given the number of people here that have this side effect on Emsam.

I get poop out about every 10 years, when TCA's stopped working but prior to Effexor coming out I tried most of MOAI's that were on the US market. They all worked very well but as usual I needed a higher dose. I was very sensitive to the "cheese reaction" & the no no foods are some of my faves. I had a few events where we could not assoc. a food with the reaction so we moved off MAOI's to Effexor when it came out.
My psycopharmacologist has a number of people on Emsam, I think he was or is envolved in clinical trials with Emsam. We are waiting to see if it can be given in higher doses w/o dietary restrictions.
However I am just 2 years into my present cocktail (Wellby + Provigil) which works well, so unless I have a breakthrough depression or otherwise go out of remission there is no reason to switch.
