Dexedrine

Posted by lymom3 on July 17, 2006, at 9:15:28

Has anyone been on this and then stopped it? I was taking 60mg a day for about a month. Helped some, but not the way that Adderall did. Adderall made me mean though. So...pdoc switched me to the Daytrana patch but I am dying here I'm so tired and crying. Does anyone have any experience with Dexedrine withdrawal? Was the dose I was taking high enough to cause that? I can hardly keep my eyes open here at work. I quit taking Dexedrine on Friday and Sunday is when this extreme tiredness kicked in. I'm hoping that it is just temporary and not a result of either the Daytrana or the Lamictal (although I'm still in the 2 week period of 50mg of that).

It sounds as though your fatigue is likely related to the discontinuation of the Dexedrine. Your symptoms will eventually go away, but I'm afraid I can't give you a timeframe.

i tend to think that it is too. I've read some about Dex withdrawals on the internet. I'm not exactly in the addict category which is where I found most of the info but extreme tiredness and depression were listed as withdrawal symptoms. Odd to me that neither of my docs seemed to think that could be the issue. I usually think the world of both of them.
I am just so exhausted I've been sleeping at my desk at work..that doesn't do much good.

I realize everyone reacts differently, but 60mg is a very high dose. Considering that you had been taking Adderall directly (?) before this, your doctor should have tapered you off; methylphenidate (Ritalin/Daytrana/etc.) is not a substitute.

I'm totally believing that tapering off would have been the thing to do. I'm half way into the h**l now, so I guess I'll tough it out for a few more days. I've never tapered off any other stimulant before and I've been on everything. Never had anything like this. I guess there is always a lesson to be learned. I just hope the exhaustion passes as I really need to do something at work to continue to be employed and I can't judge the Daytrana patch at all when I'm feeling like this.

I went off dexedrine 40mg staight up. I was on Adderall for 9 years. I just stopped it. The most worst thing about it is the psychological withdrawl. There not much psychical withdrawl.

I have many posts about coming off it. I wished i could of posted to you while i was coming off it, i had to go to a mental hospital while i was going off it. My mom took me off it.

I cant get back on it for a while.

There are some things to replace it such as Wellbutrin, at a moderate dose 300-450mg.

Take Care

Matt

Wellbutrin was horrible for me...I've tried it twice so far. I just want to sleep my life away right now. If that would pass, I might be able to judge how and if the Daytrana is helping. Hopefully tomorrow morning I'll wake up feeling like I actually slept! I am sorry to hear how bad your experience was.

Dexedrine to Daytrana

A few points:
1. Sounds like your Daytrana dose is too low. You should call your doc, explain the symptoms and the concern about losing your job. Patches are inconsistent and, even if you were taking ritalin/concerfta the equivalence varies for different people. Ask your pdoc to outline the choices.
Why did you stop dexedrine? It takes a while to titrate any ADHD medication.
Why Daytrana and not Focalin XR or Concerta?
2. I found Focalin XR had less impact on sleep
3. Provigil ( or Olmifon/Adrafinil if you live in a country where this is possible) could help the daytime sleepiness
4. try a sleeping pill or exercise to ensure you sleep
5. Supplement with fish oil (this sounded flaky until both my pdoc and internist suggested it)

Good luck, don't be afraid to be respectfully assertive.

Pdoc admits that dosing is a guess with Daytrana as it is new and he is letting me play around with it. Dexedrine just never gave me the results I needed. Too wired and unable to sleep but never the benefit of concentration and focus that I need. Have tried Focalin...made me very hopeless and depressed. The feeling passed after the drug wore off each day, but not the med for me. Concerta, been there, done that...no good result. I may pursue Provigil if I can't get the relief I need with Daytrana. I do exercise and haven't yet found a sleeping pill that works that doesn't make me a zombie the next day. Some don't work at all and the ones that do make me sleep make me so tired that I can hardly function. Never thought of fish oil...I will have to check into that.... power is finally back on at my house after 5 days without. What a nightmare. I can truly feel for those in hurricanes etc.
