more than 200 mg lamictal mg for bipolar II ?

Posted by sigolene on July 8, 2006, at 11:35:35

I've been on Lamictal 200 mg for 6 months, and it has no, or no sufficient, effect on my depression (bipolar II rapid cycle).
My Pdoc suggested to increase Lamictal up to 300 mg.
Do you think that 300 mg could be more efficient than 200 mg ?
(Lamicatal has had good results on me, the first 3 months I took it, and then lost its effect.)

Hi Sigolene.

I found that 300mg was better for depression than 200mg. Unfortunately, I experienced cognitive side effects and had to reduce the dosage.

Lamictal is supposed to be a good choice for people who are rapid cyclers. Do antidepressants make your cycling worse?

I'm taking 300 mg lamictal for bipolar 2 and it is working much better for me. (have been on this dose for 4 months). Generally I needed the extra 100 mg to help with hormonally-induced mood swings. I give the lamictal high marks as it helped tremendously even during the hormonal turbulence of pregnancy. good luck

I say give it a whirl. If you're rapid cycling, you do have other options: depakote, tegretol/trileptal, the atypicals..a combination of any of the above, possibly keppra.

WHat are your particular concerns with upping the dose? Are you worried about cognitive side effects, or lack of effectiveness, or something else entirely?

With lots of psych. drugs, raising the dose can help--to a point. 300mgs is (I think) a relatively standard dose of lamictal, so it might work out. You could also try adding in another agent instead.

I experienced severe cognitive impairment when my Lamictal was increased to 300mg, needed to dose back down to 200. Not that I still don't have cognitive & other issues, mostly due to other psych meds, but this made things noticably worse, not better. A.

Thank you for your advice.

noradrenergic AD are working during about 3 months and then loose their effect. Other AD don't work or are making me more depressed, especiallly SSRI.

I'm afraid of increasing Lamictal, because I feel already very very tired with 200mg.

You might consider adding lithium to a tricyclic or even to Parnate.

Does lamictal make you tired or does it make you anxious. Just started on 25mg and sleeping more and more. Then an hour after taking it I'm more anxious. Love Phillipa

It makes me tired, but not anxious.

Well that explains the sleeping so late and lack of energy. Thanks, Love Phillipa
