Any meds beside SSRIs for OCD(intrusive thoughts)?

Posted by jonathanupr on July 6, 2006, at 23:19:58

I'm just pedalling around here tonight and I figured I'd post this. Right now I'm just awishin' there was somethin' besides an SSRI that could take away the intrusive thoughts/OCD that is exacerbated from taking a stim. The SSRIs zap my creativity and energy, I just really don't work well on SSRIs......I've gotten down to 5 mgs of Lexapro, 6 mgs of Lamictal (low low dose, but if I go above that my muscles ache like mad and I can't exercise worth a damn....plus I get a different sort of craziness in my head that is from the Lamictal's interaction with a dopamine agonist), 4 mgs of Gabitril (has helped a ton in the irritability dept. with very few if any side effects), .5 mg Klonopin......and the exacerbating med which has given me a life: Adderall at 20-25 mgs SR....

There's gotta be somethin' else besides the SSRIs that wouldn't screw with my creativity and energy to be creative, it's like I just don't care or give a damn to write anymore......a simple word which used to have meaning to me, just doesn't anymore.

Other combos that I've thought of: Tryptophan, B6, niacin...... yet still the serotonin connection here.....

Cymbalata? but hell it's got NRI properties to it and I don't know how I'd take to that as NE always seems to be an issue if I'm already on an NE reuptake inhibiting med....

Memantine? don't know if my OCD is glutamate related, but it could be.....i should definitely check this out...

Clomipramine/Anafranil: does this screw with one's creativity at all? any experiencers of this med?

I could try going on Abilify to see if that helps tweak the SSRIs induced apathy......screw Zyprexa, just looking for donut and ice cream trouble if I were to take that again..... Seroquel?

Any input would be decent.......thanxs

BuSpar.

OCD is mostly mediated by an extreme unbalance of serotonin. Anafranil is the gold standard for OCD. Do you have rituals too? Or jsut intrusive thoughts? Counting? Irrational fears?

The aytypicals - Ztprexa, Seroquel, Abilify - all overkill in my opinion - but that's just me. I'm a musician and was on Seroquel for 3 years - and I barely played. Seroquel is good for making you fat, foggy and drugged. I don't know about Abilify.

BuSpar would be something to seriously consider.

Sooooo...Jerry-tell us the truth: are you putting yourself through pharmacy school by being a Buspar rep? :>}

It is funny-the meds that have worked for us well become "friends".

Hey bassman!

LOL! No - I'm not a rep for BuSpar! LOL - but I did think that my posts were beginning to make me sound that way! Yeah you're right - when we're on all these damn meds and they don't do anything -or barely do anything - they suck and we hate them - but when they do work we love them.

I just want to keep posting here because I rememeber years ago when there was a thread about how it seemed no one on this board ever got better. I hope by posting that it will give at least someone some hope that they'll eventually find the right mix.

Jerry,
Well said-we all could us some hope when our meds aren't working-and it continues for months, even years (I know that feeling right now!) A cheerleader in the crowd is always a wonderful thing-glad you are there to encourage us!

thanks for the info Jerry

i'm not much into rituals in regards to OCD, just intrusive thoughts (violent,perverse...enough to drive me up a wall). After taking a look at Buspar it does seem to have promise for OCD, I hadn't ever really considered it....just figured its mechanisms laid within the GABA spectrum.

I'm definitely going to give Buspar a try, why the hell not, ya know.
