Depression? confusion? disorientation?

Posted by HEART~ on June 28, 2006, at 14:40:56

Has anyone been in such a bad depression that was just so black and deep that their thinking suffered tremendously? I know not being able to focus is a major one. But what about almost becoming confused or abit disoriented at times? Are symptoms like this reflective of another type of mental illness going on?
Keep in mind I am referring to a state when a person is barely on any medication or even none but obviously suffers from depression or some type of mood stabilization problem.

My worst period of depression that was like that. I was pretty blank most of the time, and couldn't remember what I was doing, or what I was supposed to do, or the details of things I'd done. Not that I couldn't remember facts if someone reminded me--I would just zone out, in the moment, or after things and everything would be cloudy and hard to grasp.

So it can happen.

Yes, this has been the most recent manifestation of my depression. I've gotten dumber, have more trouble remembering things and people's names, have lost the cognitive agility that I was most proud of. So, you're not alone.

When I mentioned it to the psychiatrist, the head of the psych ward at NYU, he said that it was not uncommon, and that it should clear up/return with AD treatment.

That's what I hope, at least.

Yes, when I was really depressed, I had a lot of problem with concentration. I would be typing a sentence I and couldn't remember what the beginning of the sentence was about. I had short term memory problems. I had problems following conversations. At my worst, I was having problems with speech comprehension. The woman said "four dollars and thirteen cents," and I would be very confused. Also face recognition, and paying attention. I had to concentrate REALLY hard to cross streets. I was getting lost in my own neighborhood, spacing out in the grocery store...

with my gradual improvement in mood (Antidepressants) I have noticed a return in my cognitive powers. Also, when I treated insomnia (another depression symptom) and started eating again (I wasn't eating well for about 3 weeks (another depression symptom) I noticed boosts in thinking power.

Best of luck to you HEART. Depression can be really scary. At the point I sought treatment, I couldn't even comprehend what was going on around me. I was completely in my own inner world. I'm feeling a lot better, but it's taken several months. My doctor, pdoc, and T were right. Treatment improves cognitive symptoms.

yours,
-ll
