Sensitive To Psych Meds .. But Not Med Meds

Posted by corafree on June 24, 2006, at 16:46:08

When it comes to physical pain treatment or hypothyroidism or estrogen replacement or any physical ilness blah blah ... my body consumes pharmaceutical treatment of them with fervor and I require high doses of meds, ... BUT, when it comes to psych meds ... I am sensitive to very low doses!

One of my med docs explained the med meds situation explaining I did not have enough fat to store meds in my body and so use them quickly and need more than the normal person.

Do our psych meds travel a different route?

Does anyone else experience this?

bestwishes, cf

Is you're tiny and small I would think you would need less medications than someone built like football player. But I would think that would apply to all meds. Love Phillipa

Okay put up your dukes friend :)< >(: !

I'm pretty sure on this one.

My doc has to give me larger doses of estrogen valerate than people who have more fat on their bodies. Medication is stored in fat for use. Without much fat, medication depletes quickly and injections are needed 'more frequently' to replenish. Hence, need more medication in the long wrong; ... but does that mean a higher dosage in the grand scheme(?)...yes, believe so.

But, when comes to toying w/ neurotransmitters, I am sensitive to very low doses.

My questions are does anyone have the same physiology/reaction; and/or can anyone tell me if psych meds take a different route than medical/physical meds??

For example; it blows my mind that 10mg of a TCA can trigger side effects in me and others take 10x that much and experience no side effects.

I'm really not just looking for something to take my mind off 'life issues' this 'Sat' eve.

I am really interested in what triggers 'high sensitivity' to psych medications in some people and not in others.

Really, and 'that's the truth'.

And, I'm really tired, nearing total zombie stage, so hope this makes sense.

Recent studies have found an allele in the DNA (alleles are part of genes???, I forget) which is tied to something related to liver metabolism. They related this to an individual's reaction to meds and are hoping that further research may lead to the development of a test which could provide info about what dose of a med would be most appropriate for an individual.

For a loose example (I have no idea if Haldol is actually metabolized in the liver), someone who can "withstand" a great deal of Haldol and not be "knocked out" might metabolize the Haldol much quicker than someone who takes a tiny amount is out like a light. The second person might be a much slower or othewise less efficient metabolizer, so more Haldol is in their system longer than the first person.

Or so the thinking goes....I wish I had a link to the study. I heard about it from my pdoc and recall seeing a report about it, but I didn't keep it.

GG I've heard about that too. Which means there's a reason some people are tx resistant. They metabolize the drug too fast. So they need higher doses. Am I right or did I get it backwards? Love Phillipa

I guess I'm confused as I get side effects on low doses noone else does and they end up not working for me. GG unconfuse me if you can. Love Phillipa

My daughter had her baby and everything's been crazier than I, and I'm so sorry I left this conversation hanging.

When I was on Eff-XR, I would use it so quickly that I would need two doses a day. This is because I am a fast metabolizer I believe.

There are normal metabolizers and fast metabolizers, I believe.(?)

Tiny doses of psych meds create quick onset of side effects making it difficult for me to ever get up to therapeutic doses.

As far as medical meds, whenever I can, I get them injected vs. swallowing or sublingual or any other route, to bypass fast metabolization.

I feel a little 'ignorant' because I can't think how and when ingested meds enter our bloodstream in the whole metabolization process. Duh.
