Posted by bipolarspectrum on June 8, 2006, at 13:12:10

Hi,
I've been on Seroquel or another AP for practically 2 years consecutively... and since then, I've tried ever mood stabilizer in every combination and it cannot control my mixed states.. is it possibly that seroquel or AP's in general or continuing my cycling??? any thoughts would be appreciated, i know this is a weird question..

yup. Any APs, but especially the new ones (maybe b/c of the serotonin action) can induce/worsen mania and cycling now and then. APs can also worsen/cause psychosis.

Hey med,
Thats a great point... with the serotonergic and dopaminergic action they could sway the balance... i think it could happen but i wonder what my pdoc will say... it seems to be dogma that atypicals control mania...

YES, They CAN! Read the book "The Bipolar Child" (even if you're not a child or don't have one. it explains this concept very clearly!!!!) Go to your library, order a copy, it's a simple read

Agreed. Sometimes I think Seroquel controls my mania by putting me to sleep. I love how the Seroquel Web site cheerfully says, "Only four days to the 600mg dose!"

I assume you're on Lamictal (lamotrigine), but that *surely* flattens out the peaks and valleys. What about adding an anti-seizure med, such as Depakote, Trileptal, or Tegretol? Some of those have nasty side effects, but if you want to get away from the antipsychotic group . . . .

My $0.02: Stay away from Topamax (topiramate). It doesn't help and it gives you gallstones.

topamax SHOULD be known to also cause KIDNEY STONES quite frequently.

unfortunately, a large number of mds, internists, and incredibly, even urologists, don't know (or won''t accept it). instead, battery upon battery of ultra expensive tests are done, when all that is necessary is to get off the topamax.
