Xanax and mania

Posted by rjlockhart on May 31, 2006, at 22:44:31

I just wanted to say that these two dont go very well when mixed, it eases the tension but sometimes increases the mania to a more drunked mania.

3-4MG is usally what will put out mania in one dose, basically Xanax is like ethanol, exept more less intense, i mean not stucturealy, but feels like it.

Lorazepam and Clonazpeam are the main antimanic medications benzodiazepine wise, to calm mania.

Just my put

Hi ya!

I took Xanax once, 0.25mg tabs, scripted by a PsyDoc for GAD.
They (and i have read of this)can cause irrational, manic-type reactions in a % of folk.(It's different than most Benzos, in being a Triazolo-benzodiazepine-like the controversal 'Halcion', both Upjohn drugs, and VERY short acting. I remember waking up at 4am in a startled panic-like state, after taking 1 .25mg tab the previous evening,-most mentally unsettleting, and althought (Xanax has been said to be the most effective psychic pain reliever-by some-i can understand this)-, i HAVE experienced this, users should be aware of it's Alcohol-like action.

XANAX has been described as "Alcohol in a pill".
When first started the efects i noticed were:

-Initial stimulation-Dopamine increase.(MMMMM)
-Sedation for a few hours-like Alcohol.
-Hangover, a jittery withdrawal-like effect, again like Alcohol.

Xanax can be VERY effective for SEVER panic attacks (i guess Alcohol is too)and be VERY effective for INTENSE psychic anxiety/agatition.

I have taken Benzodiazepines, pratically every day for over 3 years.

Yes Clonazepam is an Anticonvolscent, and abolishes panic attacks-(i took 1-8mgs daily, depending~ for 1.5 years) but MANY users, including me, found it caused a depressed mood state.

1.5 years ago i was placed on a Benzodiazepine taper-by a community PsyDoc starting at 40mgs Diazepam daily, by now at 10mgs daily.

When the sh*t hits the fan (Psychiatrically)-2mgs Clonaz or .5-1mg Xanax sublingually, helps alot.

Cheers

Xanax caused me to have a manic episode resulting in an IP of a month and loss of my job ultimately. It was the straw that broke the back...Yes I do get severe panic at times and it did help, and it helped my disabling social anxiety, but led to loss of control and going sky high. So it's not for everyone and sure not me. Lorazepam doesn't do this to me. ////ramsea

Matt, what are your mania symptoms?

You've mentioned feeling mania many times, and I've never been clear exactly what that experience is like for you. Can you describe it, please? I'm curious.

Is this why it has an antidepressant effect in those with depression. I think it helps elevate my mood, but not to a manic state. It also helps level my mood, I suppose because I'm slightly sedated and relaxed so I don't overreact to things like I normally would. Funny because Klonopin caused depression.

I concur, I was taking Klonopin last week, and at first it was alright, but after it built up in my system some, I was depressed and very flat feeling. The PROZAC is causing mania, and Xanax helps keep it under control.

It's so amazing to see how drugs effect us all differently.
