Ran out of Lamictal--ugh $$$$$$$$$$

Posted by gardenergirl on June 5, 2006, at 23:44:24

Argh! I knew I was running low on Lamictal when I saw my pdoc last week. She gave me a scrip for 90 days so I could send it to my mail order pharmacy, which saves me $ on copays. I sent it in right away and requested the overnight delivery (extra $$ but should get it to me in time). Who knew it would take more than five days for the pharmacy to even get my order???

So I had just one tablet left tonight. I take two in a.m. and two at night. I called the mail order pharmacy to see what the holdup was in my order. It was still "in processing", so I called my pdoc to request a small scrip to tide me over. I asked the person at the pharmacy if this would mess up my insurance coverage, since I know you can only fill it every so many weeks or so. She said no. Duh, she didn't tell me it wouldn't affect refill status because I'd have to pay out of pocket! I should have known, but I didn't realize.

My wonderful "save me from spiders" husband was stuck at the retail pharmacy tonight trying to figure this out and finally paid $102 for 20 pills! And to make it even more aggravating, when I went online to get the phone number for Caremark to ask about it again, I noticed that my order now said it had shipped, and I'll receive it tomorrow afternoon.

Argh! Fortunately, I called the retail pharmacy, and they said I could bring the Lamictal they had dispensed back for a refund since I hadn't even opened the package. Thank goodness. I don't know if I could "swallow" taking 4 $5+ pills a day.

I realize I'm fortunate to have insurance and not everyone does. But wowsa! This just floored me, and the timing of it all was really annoying.

Bah.

Wow what a hassle gg. I just realized I have been walking around with a 200mg Lamictal tablet in my pocket since yesterday morning. I wish I could have e-mailed you that one.

gg what pharmacy do you use? Mine said that once the med was in my possession they couldn't take it back. A lot of wasted money and no insurance for meds as I have Medicare. Love Phillipa

It was Walgreens. I also took back a cholesterol med once before. I forget which. But the pharmacist told me it was safe for women of childbearing age (and not on any birth control) to take. Turns out to be pregnancy category X. I never took any and complained and they took that back, too.

It is a little offputting, though. I wonder what they do with it?

In this case, it seemed pretty clear to me that I had not opened the paper bag it comes in--the one that has the paperwork stapled to it and is stapled shut...

I did the same thing still no it wasn't Walgreens or a big chain it was when we lived at the beach small and private pharmacy. I'll have to see what Eckerts policy in case it ever happens again. Thanks gg. Love Phillipa

hi gg,

as you recently told me, we (may) live fairly nearby. (jungle jims)

my walgreens took back an un-opened bottle for me. i did take it back very quickly, but i did not have anything but said bottle and the regular small register receipt. i got back all my $.

mind, this was 1 of the 2 main pharmacists; (the other, aka - yet another - mr. npd, i doubt would have....only if it could have somehow made THEM $.) the main store manager did also have to ok it, though.

i suggest cultivating a close, trusting relationship with the pharmacist of your choice at your walgreens.
