Cyclothymia - questions on Contraception

Posted by Nina78 on May 27, 2006, at 13:19:05

Dear All,
I'm new to this forum, and relativly new to psych disorders. Let me give you a small intro to meyself. My name is Nina (28), and I was recently diagnosed with Cyclothymia and extended depressions. The psychiatrist I saw did not see any need for medication at the moment as I am not depressed right now, and no need for further treatment as I am not manic depressive. I feel a bit weird, of course I am happy I am not manic depressive as I was afraid I was. But then, it does give things a different spin, and I am re-evaluating all that has happened in my life so far, and the possible effects my Cyclothymia has had. I think my Cyclothymia started at the onset of puberty, a little before my periods started. My mother noticed "moods" and said it was because of my hormones. I have always tried to link my moods to my menstrual cycles, saying it was just bad PMS, but it never quite fit. Cyclothymia does seem to fit the picture better. I am now starting to recognise my moods better and earlier.

I have found this forum very useful so far. Lots of info and personal experiences! Of course I want to try to live a stable life without medication. Yet, here I see a lot of people on meds. What are your experiences trying to cope with Cyclothymia "au naturale"? Also, like any other woman I would like to be able to enjoy sex without the hassle of condoms. I have tried contraceptive pills a few times, but they seem to set of my moods. I get very anxious, aggressive even (think that was Yasmin), or sometimes just very depressed. Last year I tried Cilest. At first it seemed to flatten my moods, which I thought was pleasant. Except in my stopweek I was overwelmed by all the emotion that seemed to had been suppresed, and found myself crying non-stop. In the 3rd month orso I really missed my moods, and felt that although I didn't have strong moods, I started to slip down. Do you have any birth-control tips? Which contraceptive pills have you tried that worked well for you??

Many Thanks in Advance!
Nina

PS: Maybe you have already found it, but I would like to show you my new "bible": www.CyclothymiaWorkbook.com
Great book, good site! It's helped me so much!
