Chantix ?

Posted by curtm on May 12, 2006, at 16:29:35

>> Chantix acts at sites in the brain affected by nicotine. The FDA says the drug may help some smokers quit by providing some nicotine effects to reduce the craving and withdrawal symptoms and by blocking the effects of nicotine from cigarettes if people resume smoking. Reducing the enjoyment from smoking could help break the cycle of nicotine addiction.

** From the post above, sorry, but I am really interested. I want to quit smoking badly. Can anyone elaborate on this drug? What do I have to do to get on it? I'll try about anything to quit.

Hi,
I quit smoking about 6 months ago, after smoking for 25 years, most of that time a pack a day.
I used 2 things that helped.
1) I take 300 mgs of Wellbutrin XL (same drug as Zyban).
2) My state (New Jersey) has a Quit hotline. They give you 4 supporting phone calls. If your state does not have this, 4 visits with a therapist or social worker would do the same thing. It was really helpful. They also send you a package of material on quitting. Which I didn't use.

I have tried the nicorette lozenges. Worst tasting stuff ever. And the gum is not much better. Another thing I did was cut down gradually to 5 cigs a day then quit from that point.

Hope this helps

Tammy

Willpower didn't work for me. Self control didn't work for me. Zyban worked a little at the beginning, but not enough. I really don't like to chew gum at all, so I never tried it. The lozenges worked the best so far of everything I tried. But I am still smoking. Should I get a 240 volt shock collar that goes off if I smoke?

Hi,
If Zyban worked at the beginning, maybe Wellbutrin XL would work?? I was on regular Wellbutrin not the extended release stuff at the beginning, and it worked a little for my smoking and then stopped. See if you can cut back a little gradually-like maybe not smoking in the house or in your car at first...I know I tried countless times before I finally quit. The cravings are worst at the beginning and lessen gradually over time. Think having that self help line is what made me finally quit.

Some other pointers-try putting a rubber band around your wrist and snap it when you get a craving. Try totalling up all the $ you've spent on smokes over your life time. Even trying to quit is progress and movement towards eventually quitting. Yes the lozenges did help me some too but yuk they taste like chalk. Also eating cough drops instead of having a smoke works sometimes.

Good Luck!!

Tam

unfortunately more than anything i think it takes willpower. i was on up to 450 of wellbutrin XL, at first it made smoking taste bad and i never really 'craved' them, but i had anxiety and i WANTED to smoke. i think if i wanted to quit i could have but i just wasn't ready to. so i smoked anyway.
so i think that wellbutrin works well as a tool but you still have to make that 110% committment to quitting. maybe try lowering down first, set a quit date (sometimes that makes it worse though), set a goal and DON"T replace smoking with eating. then you're miserable, irritable AND gaining weight.
(((((((((curt))))))))))
i feel for you. but i just quit about a month 1/2 ago. it was hard but i really wanted it.
the first three weeks were the worst.

YOU CAN DO IT!
