nardil sexual disfunction

Posted by mworkman on May 14, 2006, at 20:16:59

Hey, I'm on Nardil and am having problems with lowered libido and it takes awhile to orgasm. I just got my first ever girlfriend and while we haven't had sex and probably won't for awhile, we have done other things. I don't want her to think it is her fault or get frustrated. I also don't want it to get worse. I'm on 45 mg for about 3-4 weeks and might move up.

Is there any med that isn't contradicted that would help with this?

Would parnate be better in this area? My main problem is social anxiety, so would parnate work as well for SA?

Hey, I'm very familar with Nardil sexual dysfunction. If I recall correctly I had very moderate sexual dysfunction at 45mg and then as soon as I went to 60...bam, I had the hardest time with orgasm. It was nearly impossible sometimes and I gave up. I've heard parnate is not as bad in this area. The best thing to tell your girlfriend is the truth. Communicating is the best remedy, it will be awkward if your partner does not know and you're not, ya know, able to finish the job.

I know telling would be best, but I would also like to have my libido and be able to finish. I pretty sure when I go to 60 they will probably be gone or close to it.

Is parnate any good for SA and does it have the sexual side effects.

Parnate is usually much better for sexual SE's than Nardil, but as far as being more effective for social phobia, I guess that's an individual thing. I had a lot of success adding Amantadine to the mix. The first couple of weeks nearly killed everything, but after that it was back to were I was before I started this medical merry go round some 5 years ago. By the way ladies, guys can have ejaculation without orgasm. Just thought I'd tell you so you don't feel so ripped off.

So you took amantadine with parnate or nardil? What specifically did it help with, i.e. libido, sensation, orgasm? What was the dose? Thanks.

Haven't tried it on Nardil yet as I am just on my first week and I don't want to complicate things yet. I took 100mg a day on Depakote and it worked just fine. I've seen a few references around using it for SSRI inorgasmia, so I imagine it would be ok since I haven't seen any contradictions.

Sorry, but what exactly did it "work" for? I mean what exactly were your problems on depakote if you don't mind me asking. I'm wondering if amantadine has any effect on libido.

Really hard to pop my cookies and when I did it was flat and "so what, big deal". Didn't do anything for libido though. Had to depend on naughty pictures for that. They don't require a prescription.

I had loss of libido on both Nardil & Parnate, unfortunately. My pdoc added some wellbutrin to counteract, which is officially contra-indicated with MAOIs but I've found lots of references to people using it w/o problems. It helped some but not sufficient, so I ended up stopping.

I agree that having libido is really important to living a full life & having a quality relationship - it isn't really something you can communicate around (and I tried). I would try Wellbutrin if possible or switching to other meds for SP (Klonopin, etc.). SSRIs are notorious for impairing libido as well.

Selegiline is another MAOI has a reputation for enhancing libido, but it's not clear if it's useful for SP. I'm planning on experimenting with EMSAM (selegiline patch) myself to find out. I take combination of dexedrine & klonopin which aids SP without any libido impacts.

One poster here claims low dose oral selegiline helps with SP, so that is another option.
