Zoloft and suicidal ideation?

Posted by fairywings on May 14, 2006, at 16:10:59

I didn't remember my pdoc putting me on Zoloft last summer, so when he gave me samples, I started taking them. Now I feel really depressed - almost constant suicidal thoughts, and a horrible ache in the center of me. I feel so f*ing defective - he gives me something to help the symptoms, and now I have another problem. Anyone else more depressed on SSRI's? I just started taking it, is it possible it's the Zoloft already? Like w/in 4 doses?

I can't tell my husband how I feel - he doesn't "get it" anyway - even if I tell him, and I dread seeing my T next week because I feel like I ruin his day EVERY week. I don't think I can tell him.

Sorry to be such a drag on mother's day....

Your experience is not unusual. There are two things you should do...

Call your doctor first thing and let him/her know what is happening.

Reduce the dosage. You can cut the pills with a knife or whatever into halves or quarters.

Too high of a dose at the start can make you feel a lot more depressed than you were. Doctors seem to start some of us at too high of a dose, even though they think it is a perfectly normal dose.

I don't know what dose you are on. If it is 25mg, cut it to 12.5mg. If it is 12.5mg, cut it to 6mg. If it is 50, cut it to 25 or 12.5.

Gradually increase dose every few days or once a week, in small steps, but the main thing is to talk to your doctor. Reducing the dose is just the most immediate temporary thing you can do before you can call him/her. They might want you to reduce the dose and increase it slower in smaller steps or they might want to just ditch it and try another medication that works differently.

Blueberry I didn't know the SSRI's could worsen depression. Just thought they could increase anxiety start up effects. Love Phillipa

another was prozac, i went from bad to worse. and ended up in my first hospital visit within a month of starting it.

Yes Yes Yes. It happened to me within 2 days. My GP who put me on it told me that she never heard of that happening. I got a hold of a psych who said it absolutely could do that and to stop it right away. I had already stopped. I'm not sure if its from increased anxiety or increased depression but I truelly wanted to die and I had never been suicidal before. I don't remember the dose but since I had gotten it from my GP I'd imagine I started at to high a dose so maybe a lower dose would be o.k. for you. I'm pretty sure I was given some kind of starter pack that I couldn't break the tablets up. I have to take itty bitty doses of everything.
Don't let it go PLEASE!!!!!! Get help ASAP if you are still feeling bad. KK:)
Lots Love

Thanks everybody. I can't believe I'd forgotten I'd taken Zoloft before. SSRI's aren't kind to me.

I didn't know the depression and suicidal ideation could hit me that fast - three 25 mg. doses.

Thanks again,
fw

Hi,
Just another bad experience with SSRI's-I was given Paxil and started to have suicidal ideations and then homicidal ideations-checked into the hospital and was there for 2 weeks and given Wellbutrin instead :-).

Wow Tam, I'm sorry that happened! Are you okay now? You said you just had another bad experience, had you been on SSRIs before? If so, do you mind telling me what? I had problems with Lexapro and Strattera gave me weird suicidal ideation - like thoughts would pop into my head out of nowhere - I wasn't depressed.

Glad you were able to get it out of your system and get out of the hospital.
