Even though I dont get the highs and lows, my pdoc said I could be BP2 because I am always in depressive state and my mind constantly races. Thoughts?

Eh, being in a constantly depressed state does not seem to me as indicitive of bipolar.
Racing mind can be attrubuted to anxiety.

Here is the medical description, according to the DSM:
http://www.mentalhealth.com/dis1/p21-md05.html
There are lists of possible symptoms, and you should consider each one individually. If you have five or more symptoms, and they are affecting your quality of life......
Diagnosis is not a critical element of treatment. What I mean is, you should be treating symptoms, not some label. You can treat symptoms without ever settling on a diagnosis.

Seems as if bipolar II requires the presence of hypomania. If you don't have that then I don't see how its not just depression.

Well I guess I'm just anxious and depressed no hypomania or manic episodes. Love Phillipa

Hi,
I think that the DSM is a joke... just my opinion... but i know its written eons ago and there is know a multitude of 'bipolar' categories beyond I and II... all my shrinks have always mocked the DSM-IV (the current one)... apparently they are writing a new one to be out in the next few years... anywayz, i cant contribute much to this argument... I lean on the side that many of us suffer a bipolar spectrum disorder, where we have bipolar traits without the full blown illness....

I've treated for BPII for many years, and that doesn't sound like it to me. Although the criteria for BP diagnoses seem to be vague, there's a pretty concrete basis for BPI and BPII diagnoses. For BPII, hypomanic episodes are required, and racing thoughts are just one of numerous symptoms.
Given the constant (as opposed to episodic) nature of your racing thoughts, you might want to check out major depressive order with atypical manic elements.
This is the end of the thread.
