Anyone on ambien CR

Posted by Mandy on May 13, 2006, at 18:03:14

I had horrible experiences with ambien and kept increasing doses because it wore off so quickly.
I am not sure if I even dare to suggest to my doc about ambien cr, but I am EXHAUSTED. I sleep for 2 hours, I am up for an hour, etc, etc, etc, Nothing has worked. Any idea? HELP

since I'm here anyway...

Hi - I have taken both. The Ambien was for about a year, then Dr. changed it to CR. He just said it was a better formula. It worked like the Ambien but I was then put on Abilify, and eventually insomnia was back and no Ambien CR, even 2 of them, or 3, would help. All the Rxs have been changed since then but the sleep med I am on seems to do the trick - Restoril. Totally new to me so if anyone has any info for me that'd be great!

Have you tried Lunesta? It lasts much longer than ambien IR...maybe CR as well.

I personally found CR to be only marginally better in terms of duration.

I have to disagree about Lunesta. It lasts about as long as Ambien but not as long as Ambien CR hence the controlled release. Now if there was a CR version of Lunesta then maybe....

As dirty of a drug as it may be I like Trazodone for sleep if you can stand the vivid dreams. Either that or Ambien CR because neither of them leave you feeling like crap the next day, imho of course.

Lunesta has a half life of 6 hours, whereas the half life of ambien is only 2.6 and 2.5 hrs for the 5 and 10 mg tablets, respectively.

Respectfully,

CR's half life is not much longer than the at once formulation (2.4-2.6 hrs):

Elimination:
Ambien CR administered as a single 12.5 mg dose in healthy male adult subjects, the mean zolpidem elimination half-life was 2.8 hours (range: 1.62 to 4.05 hr).

Hmmm...I stand corrected! Ignore my post and hand me some Lunesta! :-)

I find amitriptyline 10mg ok for sleep. Higher doses make me feel groggy the next day.

I have taken a tca or remeron for sleep for over 20 years. I booked a consult with the big name pdoc ($$$) here who is well respected because no one has been able to get rid of the apathy despite AD's working well for me. My new doc felt the remeron was the cause & I started lunestra. I am now more than a month off remeron and the apathy
is almost gone, I am not nearly as flat, and sexual interest has returned. Testosterone level rose 200 points after stopping remeron; these 2 events may or may not be related.

Lunesta does not seem to potentiate benzos at all/much, for me. That was the problem i had with Temazapam (or any benzo sleep med). I have taken 0-2 atavin a day for over 15 years; add a benzo sleep med and I get some common benzo side effects. This does not happen on atavin alone.

So far so good, I do have to take 6 mg Lunesta & my pdoc says many of his patients need 6 mg. I have not become tolerant to the hypnotic effects, I usually do not. On Lunesta I feel more awake in the daytime than I have in years.

Right now on Ambien CR prn. The 12.5mg dose. I find it useful. It isn't long lasting but that's never been my problem - I can stay asleep once I get to sleep. I actually have very little insomnia these days, so I rarely use it.
