Xanax's whoosh wear off

Posted by rjlockhart on May 10, 2006, at 20:12:50

I swear Alprazolam is very good at 1mg, but im serious when it wears off OMG, its like just whoosh, ill be just sitting and then start to feel a sting again.

Does anyone know about this.

It is relieving, and good for panic, but sometimes it just wears off to quicky.

Sometims it has antidepressant properties but other time i have been down on Xanax.

Anyways, can anyone share

rj

Xanax is a short acting benzo and that's what happens. Valium and klonopin are long acting. Love Phillipa

As a long time addict of Xanax....I recommend that you NEVER use the stuff.

If I had it to do all over...Klonopin or even Valium would be a better choice.

Xanax is quick, fast and effective.

Doctors are only NOW finding out how prescriptions written in the 1990's...have continued, with increasing higher doses to the present.

It is 2nd only to heroin, in withdrawl when you try to stop.

It was only intended for 6-8 weeks therapy max....but because of its highly addictive nature, few are able to discontinue without slow, long, painfil tapering.

Please understand, that I say this not just because of personal experience....but as a counselor myself, I have heard and witnessed the same story many, mant times.

Stay away from Benzos~

The good news is that you CAN taper and eliminate this drug from your life. Almost anything else that you can have prescribed is a better alternative that Xanax withdrawl without help.

You didnt mention how long you have been on 1 mg,
but no matter how long...there is hope! :D

Happy to try and help if you have any questions...I have had 10 years of research and experience with Xanax.

My experience with Xanax was quite different. It was exceptionally helpful when I was in the nightmare of panic disorder in conjection with Paxil. I don't think there is a benzo that can touch it in terms of effectiveness. There is a school of thought that says, "treat the patient, worry about the dependence later". I found I used less and less as time went on. In my support group, one of the members just stopped taking Xanax after years because she didn't know any better. He experienced no withdrawal, although most of us were amazed.

Bassman that was my combo too. And worked well for two years even with beer at night. After two years I stopped the paxil slowly. Then when I went off the xanax just switched to valium . No problem at all. Maybe I was lucky. But the better I feel as my main dx is panic and anxiety the less I take of a benzo. It's only if you increase doseages you have a problem. We are are all not the same. Benzos have saved many lives when anxiety was about to push someone over the ledge. Just my opinion. Oh I also worked in psych and the only abusers were weaned off xanax over a few days of valium. Love Phillipa ps my whole family has a genetic defect that reqires a benzo. Not high dose low. And AD's make it worse.

xanax worked great for anxiety and sleep was on 2mg for about a year or so then started feeling more and more tired so i lowered to 1mg for about 4 days then stopped all together.
can't say i noticed any adverse effects.
i guess i'm lucky?

I have a question. I have just started taking xanax and it has been the only benzo that has helped to control my fear over 10 years. I also take Nardil. What am I supposed to do??? I dont wanna leave xanax . ( I have tried ALL other benzos ). what would you do if you were in my position? . I have tried almost every drug in the market and none seems to help. Relieve of Depression = Nardil . of Fear = Nardil and Xanax

Why I have read uf users that have taken xanax for 15 or 20 years without problems?? . Does it depends on the kind of disease??.

Im on 3 mg , always trying to take less , sometimes 2.5 or 2 mg . But sometimes I want to take 5 or 6 just to see If my fear go away completely.
This Xanax issue scared me

In another post, you said you tapered off Xanax before, what makes you think you couldn't do it again, if necessary? For whatever it is worth, supposedly it is harder to taper off daily doses of Xanax of more than 4 mg- a vote not to do it except under doc-supervised, exceptional conditions.

Don't let the "Xanax is poison" comments upset you. I've abruptly stopped Paxil at 50 mg twice and Lexapro at 20 mg twice and had absolutely no withdrawal-but imagine if I was one of those many people that have had the horrible withdrawal experiences that last months! I'd definately say, "watch out for Paxil and Lexapro!". Look at the withdrawal board on this site-lots of benzo problems? No, lots of AD withdrawal problems. Being respectful of any med just makes sense, as does using the least amount that makes you feel functional-but Xanax is an exceptionally effective med (look up the rating on Remedyfind.com). My suggestions would be to use the smallest amount possible and to be sure that you are O.K. with the idea that some day you may have to taper it down, and that may or may not be a problem. Klonopin and Valium are much, much easier to withdraw from, at least in my experience, so if they work as well, they are worth switching to. The other thing to consider is whether you have a reliable supply of Xanax-if you do taper off, you'll want to take a few months, if you are like most people. Best of luck, and try not to let worrying about your meds make you even more anxious.

mmmm, what post bassman? , maybe I made a mistake or write a bad english because this is my first time in my life on Xanax

what makes you think you couldn't do it again, if necessary?

Wihdrawal does not scare me as much as that I would had to stop takingt XANAX because is the only drug that has help me with the fear. That is something Im afraid !

I have stop taking all my meds cold turkey during the last 10 years . Including aps , ssris ,tryiciclis and all else ...nothing bad happens to me... just a little bit of insomnia with seroquel

My suggestions would be to use the smallest amount possible and to be sure that you are O.K. with the idea that some day you may have to taper it down, and that may or may not be a problem.

and what would I take?? no other benzo works =(

I have tried the others benzos already

So the question is, "what medication do I take if only Xanax works?" :>} Personally, I'd take Xanax and just NOT go up in dose once you've calmed somewhat. I think you'll find you'll take less, not more, as time goes on. As I said before, some of your anxiety may be because you are afraid of the Xanax-if you are going to take the med, you've got to put that issue into the future and just say, "I need to feel better now". Withdrawal is a problem for a different day, IMO.

Tepi please don't be afraid of xanax it truly is a good med. Nothing can beat it for panic attacks. And at the time I had a bad pdoc who let me drink beer on it. And I still say one or two wouldn't hurt. I'd still be working and taking xanax and drinking beer after work. But my pdoc put me on chloral hydrate and you definitely can't drink alchohol on it. It creates Something called a Mickey Finn. Tepi if the xanax works you will only take as much as your need to calm your fear and you've finally found a combo that works for you. Stick with it. Please. Love Phillipa
