PAAAAARNATE! NOOO!

Posted by Marty on May 11, 2006, at 15:01:50

How could an AD such as Nardil & Parnate (MAOIs) stop working completely in 2-4 weeks ? We know there is often an intense episode when one starts a MAOI but.. after that ?

The 2 times it poop out on me was in the night; I'm feeling good, go to bed and wake up miserable and the med (Nardil/Parnate) does nothing good at all from this point on ... huge fatigue, irribility, little/big depression etc.

Some people here on this forum think they are the problem when such thing happens on MAOIs cause they are used to get poop out and so think they are different etc.. but I never had a real poop out before... and I got the same, if not worst, poop out on MAOI than those you are treatment resistent ..

what's the poop out rates on MAOI in the first 6 months ? my guess is about 70% from what I see on this forum in the archives.

Any though ?
BTW, Parnate withdrawal coldkey.. what can I expect.. I'm tough, need to know.

Ive said the same thing and got a few negative responses from people, parnate is not a consisent therputic drug,at least in my view,a drug shouldent work some days, and others make me feel like hell,i never know what to expect.

I shouldent have to augment it the way i do.I should take it,get the same results and deal witht the excess depression/anxiety.I can live with that, knowing what to expect.......with parnate its a guessing game, the drug is not theprutic.

People have success on it for long years, kudos to them,i truly wish i were the same.

As far as withdrawal goes,im strong too,but i DONT know what to sustitute it with,i can go through a withdrawal knowing soon theyll be a chance of reliaf,BUT going through it not knowing where ill end up is just to scary a thought for me!

Luckily, for me, Parnate works for years and years without a huge poop out. My last withdrawal was slow and I thought I'd die from it. Literally. I consider myself tough as nails (hell, I think most of us are considering all we've been through on this rollercoaster ride) but I wouldn't wish parnate withdrawal on anyone. My doc made me come off really, really slowly and it was the worst withdrawal I'd ever had, so maybe doing it fast is the way to go. Going slowly makes your life a living hell for just too long and it dragged out the physical symptoms.

Please keep us posted on how you are doing. I would like to find out how long it takes for your sypmptoms to subside. If I ever have to go off it again, I want to do it fast; however, I doubt I go cold turkey though.

Good luck!

It's a time issue. Need to start the next one as soon as possible.

When I went off parnate, cold turkey, which I did, this was definitely a mistake. I was taking a very large dose, which might have exacerbated the whole thing. But still. I precipitated a horrible series of symptoms, which could have been avoided, or at least greatly mitigated, if I had done it slower.

Even if it had been a bit unpleasant, it would undoubtedly not have gone over the deep end. I also wanted to get it over with and move on, but there's another thread here, maybe on the withdawal board (?not sure?) that suggests that slower withdrawals resolve more quickly, setting off fewer, and less long term bad effects.

Sometimes there's the toroise and the hare problem, I think.

I know this isn't the board to talk about withdrawal, but what were your symptoms ?

I got so much brain zapping that it's like star wars in my head.. I'm dizzy. and the worst part by FAR is the depression. I wasn't depressive when I started Parnate and I only took it like 3/4 weeks.. I'm so depressed.. everythink in my life looks like execrable.. feels minable.

anyway.. what was your symptoms ?

Hi, Marty. Sorry I d idn't see your question until tonight.

How's it going?

My symptoms were extreme anxiety, mood swings, from manic to very depressed, muscle tension, agitation, both emotional and physical.

At one point, I was convinced I was about to have a seizure

I could tell you more, but my doctor prescribed I think it was seroquel, which, plus a lot of xanax, stabilized me after a few hours.

It was really awful, so don't try to get off too fast. Be self-protective in terms of lowering your dose in relatively small increments, and not rushing.

Jost
