emsam

Posted by sahm on April 28, 2006, at 13:49:17

Hi, I've been wanting to try Emsam for a year now and am glad to see that it is now available. I can't find a Dr. in my area that has heard of it or says, "too many drug interactions w/maoi, won't prescribe it, too unknown." so I don't know what to do. Also, pharmacies don't carry it here---Portland, OR. Have tried all ssri's and side effects and doesn't work, just numbs.

I called up various psychiatrists to see if they were aware of EMSAM's existence, since my GP was not . I got a couple of calls back the very next day. Presumably these individuals read the various trade magazines, are aware of the Internet w/ access to a variety of published studies, and have some relatively desparate patients, are visited by drug reps, all of which could lead to knowledge about transdermal selegiline. The GP had that instinctive MAOI amygdala response you mentioned, while the psychiatrist, more in the know, did not.

sahm, hi - I live in Portland also - I called both Costco -$393.00, and High School Pharmacy -$440.00. They don't have in stock, but will order and have it in a day or two. I see a nurse practitioner and because of my previous success, 10 years ago with Nardil, and not so good results with SSRI's - she has no problem with the patch - thru the Squibb Patient Assistance Program, and her help, I am waiting for a free 3 months supply which is already in the mail. So there are people here who will listen. Good luck, Richard
