Does anyone wake up really anxious

Posted by rjlockhart on March 13, 2006, at 19:43:13

I have been waking up with adrenaline getting me out of the bed. Its horrible, i dont want to take a sedative after a wake up.

But i pace, and am filled with anxiety when i wake up. It lasts for about 2 hours. Then i slowly move into the day.

Anyone?

it happens. I used to get it pretty frequently back a couple years ago--I'd wake up with this sudden surge of anxiety and depair. Klonopin helped a good bit....also, it went away after i started eating better, exercising more, and doing more therapy, so maybe something like that could help, too.

That's what wakes me up.

Yes, it is very common in people who are anxious, depressed. I have horrible depression in the mornings when I wake up. Along with the anxiety. Here is what I read from a reliable source:

Without going into lots of medical jargon, from 3:00 to 4:00 am on the
body has to arouse itself from the self induced coma called sleep. This
requires a chemical and hormonal cascade in the nervous system to
active us for the day.

For the "normal" person this happens without unnecessary awareness. If
you have an anxiety disorder, depression or nervous system damage from
psychiatric chemicals this jolt of cortisol and other neurochemicals
can create very uncomfortable symptoms. Benzo receptors that are
healing are unable to control even minimal excitation and this daily
event is like caffeine mainlined.

Many people find they feel better later in the evening which gives rise
to night owl behavior that further disrupts the circadian rhythms and
sleep loss.

When I was depressed, I would wake up every morning around 3:30 or 4 with a feeling of complete dread, despair and surreality (is that a word?). I felt like a raven was sitting on my chest, with its black wings covering my heart.

pdoc tried to explain why this early morning awakening happens, but the descrip V posted above did a really good job of it.

FYI, I don't get that anymore. I am on an SSRI/remeron combo and also in therapy.

It is one of the worst feelings in the world to wake up incredibly anxious and depressed, to feel those awful feelings before your brain even starts to think.

Unfortunately it is common.

I used to take dexamphetamine in the mornings for my ADD and depresssion, it helped, even though i was a nervous wreck it seemed to neutralize it. And i felt normal.

Now when i wake up i feel crazy, having abnormal thoughts and scared the hell out of me. I would pace the floor, oh my gosh, and still do. But slowly i shift into the day.

Its very wierd does anyone else experience this?

When my panic disorder was in full bloom, I'd have awful nightmares in the 4 AM range and get up tired, fearful, and teary. I recently had a return of PD and took 0.5 mg Ativan just before going to bed and that seemed to help a lot and not make me feel dopey the next day, even though I get up at about 5 AM. It is an awful, awful way to start each day-best of luck putting it behind you.
