Black Blue no longer....whew!

Posted by JaclinHyde on March 7, 2006, at 19:34:57

Thanks to all who responded to my initial post about my sudden color changes (lol!) I didn't go to the doctor like I probably should have because I googled and found that if it is thrombocytopenia and the drug is stopped the platelets usual return to normal fairly quickly. I didn't stop my parnate, just backed it down and made damn sure I didn't take any aleve/aspirin like before and now the black and blues are starting to heal. A few have faded and the rest are in the process of doing the same. Looks like I got real lucky and will make damn sure I don't combine perscription strength aleve and parnate again, at least not at the rate I was taking the aleve before.

Nice to know people out there care. :-*

Good news. How much aleve were you taking? Did it help?

You really should get your platelet count done regardless. While you're probably OK, this is not something you want to be wrong about, especially if you happened to trip and fall.

You are probably right of course. But I wonder what they do if it is low? It must be getting better or I wouldn't be healing so I expect to hear 'wow you had a close one there. Be careful in the future and (like you said) don't fall in the meantime while the count is still coming up.'

It is funny how I am/was a hypochondriac....then the MAOI's cured it and I went the complete opposite, 'oh there is nothing wrong with me I think I will ignore all bodily symptoms now' lol! Like I said, you are right of course it is just a strange little note on the wonderful world of feeling 'cured' of anxiety.

What they will do depends upon how low it is. If it is a dire situation, they do a plasma transfusion. Otherwise, I suppse they monitor you and make medication adjustments.

Any way you slice it, this is not something you want to sweep under the rug. How can you be sure your count is normal without blood work? Even if the black and blue marks heal, the Nardil still could be causing problems. If you have thrombocytopenia there is a risk of death from what would otherwise not even be considered an injury. It is not a good idea to continue taking these drugs if they are causing significant platelet derangement in the long term--whether life threatening or not--either. I am not familiar enough with this to give you further advice. :(

Great, so if I don't take an MAOI then I will kill myself and if I do take it it may kill me.

I guess I will just stop the parnate, wait till my platelet count is normal and then slit my wrists because I won't bleed to death then.....lol!

I still think it was a combination of the parnate and the massive aleve doses. I have been on MAOI's for over 25 years now so if parnate or nardil or marplan hurt my blood before now I can still say that if I hadn't have started them way back when I wouldn't be here today. I'll take my chances with it and just try not to fall/cut myself.

I didn't know you took a massive dose of Aleve; that could certainly excacerbate the problem (I think). Stick to opioids, they're the safest pain killers around. ;)

If it is that crucial you remain on the medication, I'm sure there are other supportive measures that exist besides discontinuing the medication. That said, I hope for your sake that your intuition is right...

Yeah, I had a bad toothache so I was taking the perscription strength aleve every 8 hours for about 3 days. Plus I take fish oil which can thin the blood. Thanks so much for caring and for the great idea about opiods ;-)
