Geodon

Posted by yesac on February 26, 2006, at 12:15:42

I'm considering trying to switch to Geodon from Seroquel because, although I think Seroquel is somewhat helpful for me, it makes me sleep about 11 hours every night. I find this very annoying. Other than that I basically like Seroquel, but I'm not sure how much more I can put up with the excessive sleeping.

I also take lithium. I've tried Risperdal, Abilify, and Zyprexa, with varying degrees of success and varying side effects. I have a sort of agitated depression, and Seroquel seems to help calm my mind down, decrease my irritability, and lift my mood a bit.

I'm just wondering about people's experiences with Geodon. Any input would be appreciated.

How much Seroquel are you taking? Sometimes, the sleepiness disappears at higher dosages. Have you ever taken Wellbutrin and Seroquel together?

It worked great for me right out of the gate at only 20mgs.

It gave me great clarity and like you said calmness to my thougths. I say calmness, but it was almost like a calm energy.

It pooped out on me in about a month and half to two months and raising the dose to 40mgs caused pretty bad insomnia. It also started to cause some panic attacks which is rare for me, so I had to stop. I'm going to try it again, because I was taking three other drugs which were removed after I responded to the Geodon.

If I try it alone again I'm also going to start it a a higher dose. Don't let my failure at it dissuade you though. I think its a good drug for alot of people.

Well, for the first 6 months or so that I took it, I took about 100 or 200 most nights. It didn't do much for me though until I added the lithium. That was last May. Lithium seemed to enhance the Seroquel, so I cut back to only 50mgs. I took 50 for a long time. I also stopped taking it a couple of times, thinking that it wasn't working. It seems to work, but kind of inconsistently.

Anyways, in early January I went back on the Seroquel after about a month of not taking it. Since then I've gone from 0mgs to 500mgs. I've been on 500 for just over a week. It's not that I'm excessively tired/fatigued/sedated during the day time. It just seems to be that I need like 11 hours of sleep in order to feel like I'm well-rested and I've gotten a good night's sleep.

I'm hoping this effect will wear off after a while, but I'm not betting on it. The whole time I took 50mgs, I pretty consistently needed 9 hours of sleep.

I've taken Wellbutrin a few times. It never did anything for me, even at 400mgs. When I combined it with Cymbalta last year, I really flipped out. I got really really agitated and pretty much had a meltdown-- could barely communicate. Extremely distraught.

I don't know if trying it again in combination with different drugs would be useful. Do you think a different combo can make that much difference for a drug that didn't work at all on it's own?

It can for some people to be sure. However, it sounds like you need to be cautious with what you add Wellbutrin to. Had you tried Cymbalta without the Wellbutrin?

Yes-- it was not very helpful. I think it got me sort of hyped up, more distraught and agitated. The Wellbutrin just made all that worse-- I think it kind of put me over the edge.

I'm real sorry to hear that you had such a difficult time with these drugs. One can only guess at what happened biologically. Perhaps you can list which drugs made you feel worse and which drugs made you feel better.
