i need advice (nardil side effects)

Posted by cmw198302 on February 19, 2006, at 23:13:28

Current medicatins - Klonopin (daily), Nardil

Condition - EXTREME social anxiety, which has spawned EXTREME depression. also derealization (im assuming also spawned from excessive social anxiety and/or numerous traumatic pot experiences)

Hello to everyone out there. This happens to be my first visit to this site so I'm uncertain whether or not this appertains to the jist of this board. Oh well, I apologize in advance. Anyway, my shrink began me on Nardil just recently. I began at 15 milligrams the first week, rising to 30 the following week. No adverse effects were experienced throughout the first week. Around day 10, I felt noticeably better. Or so I thought. The good feeling lasted about 5 hours, whereupon ending abruptly. It was very discouraging - I literally felt as If I had the winning lottery ticket in my hand and then lost it. I must add that this analogy is anything but exaggerated given that these issues have haunted me since the age of 13. Anyway, for the past three days (days 10 through 13 of initial dose), my mood fluctuates drastically. I'll feel perfectly happy, optimistic of future opportunities, you know, just swell - nearly euphoric. Then snap, within seconds I値l return back to a self-loathing depression. Then perhaps 20 or 30 minutes later I return to contentment. I'm not sure if this is normal or not but I am dying to know because this is driving me crazy. If anyone else has experience taking Nardil I beg for your advice and experience. I知 also feeling extremely apathetic. When I am feeling the postive nardil effects I知 happy...yet disinterested in everything. Isn稚 that ironic? God!!! I just want this to work . I hope this sh*t passes... Anyway thanks for taking the time to read this excessively long post and I wish everyone well.

-Charles

I am too on Nardil. Are you sure that the mood swings you currently describe are not your usual symptoms absent of Nardil? It may be a little early to tell whether it is working. 45mg may be the effective dose, I'm not sure. I would give it more time, but if these new symptoms don't pass and you believe them to be caused by Nardil then I would consult your doctor. Maybe someone here on the board can give you more feedback.

Try to be patient, Charles.

Most people don't glean the full benefits from Nardil until they have been taking 60-75mg for three or more weeks. That you have had such a positive "blip" improvement so early in treatment is sometimes seen as being a good sign of things to come.

Don't look at your mood states and behaviors too microscopically at this point. It will only create for you anxiety and confusion. Let the drug do its job. There might be mood swings, but consider them to be part of the improvement process.

Speaking of mood swings and euphoria, how do you know that you are not bipolar? If you are bipolar and are not being treated for bipolar disorder, you might suffer a Nardil-induced mania or find that standard antidepressants by themselves don't work.

Hang in there with the Nardil.

I didn't notice too many SEs with it, and none like you describe. Your dosage may not yet be high enough. Stick with it, though.

Charles, sounds to me (only my opinion) that you're definitely having a good response. You have to be patient with MAOI's- And you're way early in the game. With MOAI's there's a lot of increasing and lowering of the med to find the "therapuetic level" that's best for YOU. So, hang in there and sometimes it take 6 wks or so to get it working the way you want it to. Make sure you see your doc every 2 wks and keep a diary of what's going on and tell him everything.

Best wishes, Tyler

Thanks for the quick responses, they're much appreciated. And you guys are probably right - I'll just give it some time and see what happens. And to answer the question as to if I'm bi-polar would be a negative. I had not experienced mood swings like these prior to starting the medication. But anyway, thanks to everyone for your help.

I sort of experienced the kind of things you are experiencing with Nardil.

I only took it for a month though. I remember feeling really awful on it at one point and then sometimes I felt sort of good.

I was really apathetic, zombie like on it and my brother commented when I rang him that my speech was really slurred and I sounded drunk.
