After Abilify Im drinking all day dont get drunk

Posted by Girlnterrupted on February 15, 2006, at 7:26:06

I had to quit Abilify because it was killing me.

I was agitated and anxious the whole day, to the point that I couldn't do anything. I stayed in the computer for 7 minutes, and then ran to bed, but then I had to get up and do something else, because nothing would sort of "calm me down." So I quit, and after 3 days I still feel my heart pounding in my chest. I started to drink a little alcohol to calm myself down, and I was surprised to realize I no longer get "drunk." I just get more calm, but not drunk.

I hope this is not permanent, but it's scary. I hope Abilify didn't mess me up for good. I feel my heart pounding in my chest and can see it if I stand in front of a mirror. It's like a little bump every second. Abilify was a nightmare.

Sounds like akathisia to me. Oh, but your doctor probably never mentioned to you about akathisia, why would I not be suprised. I wouldn't blame the psychiatrists though, they are rather smart. Better to be the priest than to be the "inquired".

Anyway, tell your doctor about your dis-ease and see if he can give you some benzodiazepines for a couple of weeks. Doesn't getting more information on the internet than your doctor make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside? (And please don't just suddenly quit any medicine you are taking, it is neurologically harmful; your doctor didn't tell you that either huh?)

Hopefully in a few hundred years this fringe will be known as just another atrocity. Or who knows... maybe sooner.

What is akathisia? Is it permanent? I'm in a research study, so they didn't really mention anything, except when I told them I wanted to quit, they say they could decrease the dose. I said "Too LATE!! You should've done that at the beginning." Because I'm too messed up to even want to *see* the Abilify. Let alone ingest it.

I'll probably call my doctor and tell him that if he doesn't give me some benzos, that I will simply keep buying Tequila. Haha.. Which I'm really doing! I have OJ with a shot of tequila with my breakfast, lunch, diner.. and in between meals.

From your affect in response, it would seem that this akathisia is not permanent (if it even is akathisia); nor is it of any significant pain, so I would not worry.

Some questions:
How long have you been on Abilify?
Did you stop taking it suddenly?
A reserach study?
In your reference to "doctor", is this doctor your internist?

Also, about the tequilla. Alcohol has the similar effects of benzodiazepines. I would recommend you not drink so much of it, but in a moderate dosage it may at the least alleviate the symptoms you are still having from the Abilify. By the way, you are not taking them (Abilify and alcohol) together are you? Please don't for the sake of your safety.

Anyway, please consult this:

I use their definition of moderate alcohol consumption.

Hi, fenix.

Can you say what you're referring to? Is dr-bob.org using java? What is the privacy concern? Thanks.

I haven't taken Abilify, I think it is new. But I have lots of experience with drinking and psych meds of all genres. I think in looking back, probably zyprexa, serzone, welbutrin and maybe Paxil make alcohol the least fun.

I think the main thrust of your post is the feelings that you are drinking to stop, I just thought I'd throw in that the alcohol has always come back for me after a while. Nothing sucks worse than spending the money, getting sick, and not having a good time at least.

What dose did you start with? You should start low, like 2.5mg.

Abilify plus alcohol.... » fenix

In regard to this statement ...

"By the way, you are not taking them (Abilify and alcohol) together are you? Please don't for the sake of your safety."

Help! I started taking 5 mg. of Abilify two days ago. Tonight I am extremely anxious and agitated. I took a Klonapin (0.5 mg.), but I am still an anxious wreck and my 2-year-old and 6-year-old daugthers are still awake.

I REALLY NEED A DRINK!!!

What would happen if I mixed alcohol with the Abilify? Just a vodka and tonic?? And should I cut down to 2.5 mg. of the Abilify tonight?

Thank you!
cindy

PS. LONG history of meds on my part. I am going through a severe depression right now, and Abilifly is the new thing we are trying. There may be some cycling going on ... not sure if I have BPII or not. No meds work, or stay working, or they have very adverse side effects. Hence, the Abilify trial.
